Salting sidewalks is common in places that get a lot of snow (e.g., Detroit).

I love overcast days Not sure why, but I always liked them. Not too bright, not too warm.

I don't think we ever salted our sidewalk back home in Massachusetts, just shoveled it... and even then, sometimes we didn't shovel it. (The town has a sidewalk plow, but I don't think they salt the sidewalks either... er, better not walk down my street in the winter I guess)
