I am a great admirer and player of classical music. For me, I would have to say that the Baroque and Early Romantic periods are my preference. Baroque-era music imparts a certain sort of solemnity and clarity of the soul which other music aspires to do but cannot quite reach; and as for Early Romantic, who can deny the sublimity of Chopin's Etudes or the emotion of Mendelssohn?

I am rather not fond of contemporary-era music, though, save for a few particular composers.

As far as the poll is concerned, I find myself compelled to vote for the Early Romantic period. Although my love for the Baroque era is great, it cannot compare with the emotions which Chopin evokes even when I am at my most stoic and uncompassionate.

Chopin is lovely but I always preferred Liszt. His idea of thematic transformation is fascinating and not to mention a huge influence to modern composers. The work of film composers these days, which I admire deeply, wouldn't be the same if they didn't think of modifying a leitmotif.

I have a very love-hate relationship with classical music, to be totally honest. Studying three years as a music composition/theory major, I began to loathe the genre after being force-fed the mindset that it was superior to any and all other forms of music, and that my desire to pursue a career in contemporary, non-classical music was a frivolous ambition at best. I also feel that there is a special place in hell for the alto clef and its practitioners, but I digress

I will say that, despite my aforementioned attitude, that I do have a large appreciation for the classical genre and its technical contributions to virtually all forms of modern music. I grew a bit of a soft spot for Sousa, which I guess would be Late Romantic? I don't know, to me, when I think of the embodiment of "American" music, his tunes always tend to come to mind. That isn't to say that there aren't many great composers out there, though I feel like its doing a bit of a disservice to many of the unsung greats to say that I like Bach and Beethoven...that's like being a teenager in the 70s and saying you like The Beatles...it's like, well no shit? Though its hard to argue against Moonlight Sonata and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire being some of my favorite tunes despite them being so "mainsteam" (god, I'm sounding like Sofi is supposed to sound)

I was trained a jazz guy and that's always where my forte and knowledge has lied when it comes to anything earlier than contemporary (huge Monk fan) Since I balance most of my musical activities these days between producing pop music and composing for video games, my influences tend to come from all walks of music, jazz and classical alike.
