I just finished reading Brave New World which was written in the twenties by the way, and it is an exact replica of what society is like today...plastic and narcissistic. Hmmm mabye Huxley divined the future?

Only one of these I've read is Anthem, which is interesting but awfully short. Basically it's about a future where collectivism is all-important, to the point where "I" and "he/she" don't exist, just we and they. Dystopian novels are fun to read, but at the same time awfully scary

Both are Living Hells, but on opposite ends of the spectrum.

I had to read 1984 in English class last year, I hated it...

And now my English class is reading another Orwell book, Animal Farm. What's with my school's English department and Orwellic books?

Fahrenheit 451 is peculiarly accurate as well. Society controlled by the media, people loving their electronics more than their families, diet pills, etc. It's still legal to be a pedestrian, and the firemen won't burn your house down for owning books, but it's pretty close for a 50-year-old book.

What's ironic is that in the first publication, the publisher censored all the bad words in the book.

And some may be interested to know (but most don't care)... The main character in that book, Guy Montag, is what ultimately inspired my current username.

My English class (note: English, not reading) devoted the entire second semester to reading To Kill a Mockingbird.

I kid you not.

The entire final exam was based on parts of the story. Considering I got absolutely fucking bored with it (and was hoping more focus on ENGLISH!!*@%) I failed. (Twice.)

What a school system we have here.

Animal Farm is much more interesting to me because it's one of the best Alagories I've read. You just need to pick out the right things. Like, Who was Stalin, Who was Trotsky, who represented the hard, mindless worker class. Stuff like that.

Didn't you know? The morons in the '20's thought that the word "English" was synonimous with "Literature." You'd be better off taking "Grammar and Lexical Conventions of Language"

Well, it is to be expected, since basically every important grammar convention is taught in elementary and middle school. Most, if not all, vernacular classes from grade 9 onward focus mostly on literature, its authors, and its movements.

Also, isn't 1984 like that one book who everyone in the US is required to read before passing high school?
