So yesterday I had an energy drink for the first time in my life (I'm 20.9 years old.)

I've been mostly clean from caffeine for the past several years, having some only when I absolutely need to stay up e.g. for school. I don't do alcohol, pot, or anything like that.

I didn't get enough sleep the night before and was trying to be productive, working on a programming project with some friends, and I just didn't have the energy... so I asked my pal to recommend me an energy drink.

I had a Nos, which apparently has 7 or 8 times the caffeine of a mountain dew. I didn't read the label until it was almost half gone. The stuff smells vile and tastes like especially sour piss, but for some reason it's hard to stop drinking it once you start.

It makes you wake up, and feel like shit. After three hours of being alert but still working through a mental fog, I started to get shakes and blurred vision, trouble focusing my eyes. Shortly thereafter I lost my sense of balance almost completely and my stomach began to burn. Luckily I was sitting down, so the sensation of being seated on the wall or the ceiling didn't cause me to fall or anything.

At four hours we went to get dinner, and I almost fell down every flight of stairs on the way to the car. Of course I wasn't driving, that would have been a terrible idea. The mix cd I made for this car sounded amazing, like nothing before. I felt blue behind my eyes and a strange detachment from my ears, as though they were several feet from my head. Shakes stopped everywhere but in my upper lip.

But then just as the cruel chemical cocktail was leaving my nervous system, I got to eat some decent Chinese food and get warm and full. So I felt amazing. An hour later I crashed and passed out.

I basically don't recommend it, but at least I have a story to tell about it.

Yeah, see, you have to do caffeine gradually--and I'd avoid those energy drinks. As a caffeine connoisseur, I have experienced a number of the... odd things it does... dizziness isn't usually it, but the whole grooving with music and such, yeah.

Coffee or Dr. Pepper/Mountain Dew is the way to go. All that Taurine just screws you up.

For what you speak of, a good espresso or can of Dr. Pepper would have done. Then gradually continue drinking more throughout the day. More likely to give a balanced energy gain rather than crash n' burn. Though be prepared to drink water and lay down afterwards--this always gives me neck aches, although after allowing me to do superhuman amounts of work, so it isn't without its uses.

You amazingly get used to it. And I don't even drink a whole lot of energy drinks too often.

I have an occasional Lo-Carb Monster drink. I like to call it my "Adult Beverage" as I only have it once in a while.

I love the taste of it, but I know it won't be a special drink if I have it a lot, so there.

I haven't tried NOS, but the one energy drink I did have once (which name I forget entirely, it was green and didn't taste very good) didn't really have much of an effect on me at all... but I drink a lot of soda and stuff, so maybe I've built up an immunity to the stuff.

Me and my little bro have an inside joke that the (green?) soda that Sam drinks in the 'Through the Fire and Flames' video speeds up perception, that's why he's able to solo like he does...

I've tasted Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar, Amp, and Venom, from what I can remember. Red Bull and Rockstar are both terrible and ridiculously overpriced. Amp, Monster and Venom taste better and you get over double the amount of drink for the same price, if you shop around enough. I've found most energy drinks are between 2 and 3 dollars a can, though some are obscenely overpriced even at nearly 17 ounces, and some you can find a great steal at.

Venom is my personal favorite since the fruit punch and mango flavors are really delicious, not to mention that it's not sold in a can, but in a disposable aluminum bottle, so it can literally last all week if you have the self-control not to drink all the deliciousness in one night. Basically, those flavors are similar in taste to fruit soda. I bought one out of impulse at the mall for way more than what I'd usually get at the corner store before they stopped selling it ($3+ dollars including tax versus $2.19). There was another time that I happened to find a 6 pack of 8 ounce mini cans at a store I've never been in before, at about $3.25. So, that was about 6.7 cents an ounce versus the standard 12.9 cents per ounce I shill out.

In short, if you want to try out energy drinks, they're pretty damn expensive, so just disregard all 8 ounce cans unless they are in a pack, focus primarily on the 16 ounce ones, and figure out pricing from there.

Monster is better than everything and I love it.

I also drink mango Venom (THANKS GABU :B), NOS, and Go Girl sometimes. They are all delicious in their own ways, but Monster is my favorite.

Red Bull is gross and I hate it. Rockstar isn't much better, but at least the cans are bigger and it's cheaper.

I haven't tried Amp yet, and Redline tastes gross and makes me way too jittery.

Also, never drink No Fear, I actually got physically ill from drinking half a can. It literally made me vomit.

Also also, cautionary tale: Overdosing on caffeine is like the second least pleasant thing I have experienced (the first one being the kidney infection I got over Memorial Day Weekend, 2008). Drinking a 32-ounce Monster and a Redline in one go = worst idea I'd had in a while. Vomiting, dizziness, rapid heart rate, and fear that I was going to die for my stupidity were the results.

Yeah, going from zero to nos in half an hour was a bad idea. It would have been obvious at the time, had I not been so damn tired.

That's how they get you.

Yes, this is why I just drink Dr. Pepper. Though I've overdosed on caffeine alone.

Feeling like your heart is gonna explode sucks.

I guess I was just never really into caffeinated beverages. I got through an entire night and a day with no sleep thanks a single bottle of BAWLS once, though. My friend gave it to me. That's back when I was a total fucking insomniac though. In the battle with insomnia, I've won.

I'm thinking of getting into coffee the way winetasters are into wine. Coffee will be my drink to pretend I'm classy and I'll only have it at cute little coffee shops where they serve the drinks in little coffee cups. While I'm there, maybe I'll smoke a Parliament cigarette with my coffee so it'd be like I'm in Jim Jarmusch's 2003 short film compilation Cigarettes and Coffee.

Fair trade, of course, or bust.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
