It's like that in Chinese, too. While the formal name is "yì dà lì" (意大利) ... I've seen only "yì" (意) used and only "měi" (美) for America.

Actually, I think people would only say the short form if it's obvious by context you're referring to the country. I'm not really sure about this, I'm basing this on what I've seen.

Vietnamese looks odd to me in general. All those multiple diacritics, and they use some unique ones. Also, some odd consonant groups (I think about half the Vietnamese people I know have first names ending in "nh"). Usually I just try to approximate the name using English sounds because there's no way I'd get all the Vietnamese sounds right.

Yeah, Vietnamese is world famous because they stack their diacritics from top to bottom with no regard for sanity.

Really, they should've stuck with Chinese characters.

I think part of it is that Vietnamese has something like 60 vowel sounds, counting all the tones. The Latin alphabet only has 6 vowel letters, counting Y. So they had to improvise.
