My school upgrades their stuff pretty frequently (all computers are on Win7)

Some labs in my department also have quad core/8gb/ dual screen setups.


And the people who set things up are pretty knowledgable.

My college uses 7. And as far as I know, we don't actually have any blocks, which is in contrast to secondary school, in which everything but the bloody BBC was blocked.

My school has a block website function which I was trying to override through at an "at school computer" though the command prompt and after I almost succeeded the next day Command Prompt got blocked. My only consolation was that I never got into any trouble or anything. I don't think they ever found out

My sister's college switched from XP to 7 last year for almost all the computers (except for a few in the engineering labs and the library which need the 16-bit apps) and they haven't had many problems

I bought my computer through the school's purchase program and it has Vista, at least... (at the time, Vista was still the latest version of Windows) Still haven't seen anything newer than XP on any of the academic-specific computers, though.

The computers at my college run everything with full administrator privileges by default.

Everything.

It came in handy when I couldn't find the language selector in Simplified Chinese Firefox and decided to reinstall it in English.

Workaround for blocked command prompt:

COMMAND.COM.

Seriously. I was LIVID when my high school kept bumping up security, which actually limited me (and I wasn't even doing anything wrong) ... part of why I started booting Linux. COMMAND.COM got me the CLI I needed on Windows, though... not sure if it exists beyond XP, though.

So we spent most of our time playing DOOM II that I hooked up with a usb to the school computers. Fun class. And I got an A in it.
