Oh, so it was you who organized it. Thank you, the context you provided helped with my translation as well. I was considering adding location names for the text and sorting it by town like you did, but some of your formatting confused me a little, so in the end I left it in the same order as the text dump. Perhaps I'll add your commentary on the King's Tomb line to my article, if I have your permission.

Thanks for the link to the Legend of Zelda differences, very interesting. ^^ I really wonder who translated these two games. I was searching around for translation credits and found nothing. Any information?

Of course! you can add my info on "the king's tomb"-difference, I'm just a simple editor who did this for lltvg mostly for sheer interest, I'm glad it helped. : ) I've wanted to know for decades what some of those lines really were about. I stumbled upon that site after looking around the net if there was anyone who had made a retranslation-rom patch for the three classic Zelda games, and was actually quite chocked that no one seems to exist yet, I thought with the huge popularity of the games and the largely known differences/censoring and bad localization, it would at least exist one for the third installment, but I guess it have to do with the great playability of the titles, good translation or not.

An other difference in the NES version of Zelda II is that they redid the appearances for some of the town-people, for example, an old woman saying a particular line in the Jap-version are sometimes a different character in the NES, they added a few new sprites, a little boy, a young man etc. there was few variations in sprites for town people in the original.

I would love to see you tackle the first game as well. Nice site.

The only information I've found about the early localization of these games, is this article: http://www.thehylia.com/lost_in_translation.shtml

Appreciated! I shall, then. Here's my take on The Legend of Zelda. Quite a few hints that were replaced by different information in the English version, including one whose order was changed.

I'm a little iffy on the accuracy of that article, though it was an interesting read. I don't think the writer knows Japanese either, so I'm not sure if I believe his assertions about information on translation differences in the games. Despite him claiming that the translator of Ocarina of Time wasn't fluent in Japanese, I know from my own work that it seems to have a pretty accurate translation. Despite his confidence in the later titles, it's also my experience that even modern-day localizers don't always translate things literally (hence the efforts of fans to retranslate pertinent information in games as recent as The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess). In addition, I don't think the "Zelda is your destiny" text changes between versions of A Link to the Past. In all the Japanese ROMs/carts I've played it says the exact same thing, trailing off in ellipses. You can see in this video that the last thing Link's uncle says is...

「ゼルダ姫を救いするのだ。
お、お前は、姫の … …。」

"Save Princess Zelda.
Y, you are the Princess's ... ..."

Does ALttP even have different versions?

Yes, there are three versions of ALttP. I dunno if they differ in the game script, but they had some rather strange bugs.

Such as? Any idea where I might find ROMs of the three? PM me if necessary. I'd like to check them all out, since that part's right at the beginning.

Nice! Thank you so much! Just a few minor things I noticed with your comparison: the Japanese intro lacks "The" in the title, it's just "Legend of Zelda" in the FDS-version. The NES translation of the quote: DID YOU GET THE SWORD FROM THE OLD MAN "ON" TOP OF THE WATERFALL? I noticed yours were missing the "ON" in it, most NES quotes were also lacking the period at the end.

EDIT: I noticed that some of your NES lines were also missing the exclamation mark. You have all the lines on this page: http://datacrystal.romhacking.net/wiki/Legend_of_Zelda:Notes

Yeah, I fully agree with you about that article, sadly it's the only info I have came across about it. I also think what the article refers to regarding ALttP is the many re-releases on GameBoy, Virtual Console etc. I highly doubt the script was revised on SuperFamicom carts. Never even knew there was a silly controversy surrounding that line in the first place, weird.

Well, you know, conspiracy theories and all that. =)

As for the NES script, I just copied and pasted from the text dump on LLTVG that I linked at the top of the article. I'll use the link you provided to fix it up if I feel up to editing that article again. Thank you!

EDIT: In addition, none of the 3 versions of the SNES Japanese ALttP say anything different than what I wrote above.

Yeah, but I meant the original English translation script, LLTVG only provide the Japanese script as far as I know. Anyway, thanks again for your fine job, I've seen a few zelda web sites that already have mentioned your work.

I don't know if this is worth adding to the wiki or not, but there is a very minor visual difference in the ending sequence of Hyrule Fantasy for the FDS I noticed last time I played it.

After Zelda have thanked Link, they both hold up their Triforce parts then they both disappear just as the second message of text appears under them, in the NES-version they never go away. Unfortunately these two pics aren't synced, but you get the idea.

Combed through a dump of the decompressed graphics in A Link to the Past. I'm pretty sure these are all unused, but verification would be nice.

Is that little blob dude the ball thing you find on Death Mountain being kicked around by the bully?

It looks a bit different from it, but I haven't played the game in a good while and don't remember.

I'm not completely sure about this one, as it was a long time since I last played the SNES version of Zelda, but according to this guy:
http://forums.legendsalliance.com/topic/22676-real-world-religion-and-cultural-influences-in-zelda-3/

This star-symbol seen below was removed from the SNES version.

Is that correct? If so what did they change it to?

Anyway, other minor differences seen in the Japanese original game were some of the english names and descriptions seen in the ending sequence, maybe changed due to the limit of space available:

SFC:
THE LOYAL PRIEST

SNES:
THE LOYAL SAGE

SFC:
FINGER WEBS FOR SALE

SNES:
FLIPPERS FOR SALE

SFC:
OCARINA BOY PLAYS AGAIN

SNES:
FLUTE BOY PLAYS AGAIN

and in the quest history at the end, Ganons Tower is spelled Gannon's Tower.
Liliana
"A horrible person". That's what it says. "A horrible person."

We weren't even testing for that.

SFC:
THE LOYAL PRIEST

SNES:
THE LOYAL SAGE
Edited to remove religious reference.

SFC:
FINGER WEBS FOR SALE

SNES:
FLIPPERS FOR SALE
Edited because Americans are likely to have no idea what "finger webs" are. (Wait, did these really go on your hands in the Japanese version?)

SFC:
OCARINA BOY PLAYS AGAIN

SNES:
FLUTE BOY PLAYS AGAIN
Probably edited because most Americans (at the time) would not know what an "ocarina" is.

and in the quest history at the end, Ganons Tower is spelled Gannon's Tower.
"Ganon" is the correct spelling, at least in the US.

Yes, most likely.

No, of course, this item did go on Links feet, so it's obviously a correction.

But only 6 years later they would, sounds weird but you may be right.

In Japanese, "finger" and "toe" are basically synonyms.

It's not democracy, it's DiGiorno.
It's just engrish.
The item is normally called 水掻き (水かき in game) anyway. Which doesn't relate to web-feet unlike other synonyms for flippers have.

Also Ganon has always been ガノン so yeah, the double-n is engrish too. Everyone knows that.

Not sure about the other languages, but the Japanese version had the room, if I'm not mistaken the message is somewhere along the lines of "welcome to the secret room," etc. GBA version has it, but I believe you can no longer access it without externally modifying the gameplay.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
