Why on EARTH did this fucking mother DO THIS? She makes my mom look perfectly reasonable in her crazy-ass sheltering methods! The only difference is that I didn't really give a fuck about acne, because it ends up being worse whenever I try washing.

Agreed. Denying a child basic needs such as clothing, access to hygiene, friends, activities... I'm surprised the mom let her go to college.

At least she's free now. Probably scarred for life and whatnot, but free to be her own person. At least, I hope so.

Edit: Also, why didn't anyone see the signs? I thought they taught teachers how to recognize symptoms of abuse, and then to contact appropriate authorities to rescue the child...

And I thought I was sheltered until I read this (not being able to leave the yard alone until 13 and all). My childhood didn't even come close to this.

There never will be, though. Ethics and whatnot. Denying certain people the right to reproduce, no matter how unqualified they are, will undoubtedly start a shitstorm. Not to mention the actual logistics of the test: what's on it, what's not on it, how it's to be administered, etc.

It is terrible what parents do to their children. Things like that are why I cannot really believe people who claim that it is terrible to lose one's childhood. To the contrary, good riddance! No more parents pushing their ideas, especially their flawed ones, onto their children.

Children must be taught responsibility, sanity and the laws, but sheltering them just makes them more likely to feel like going completely nuts once they're free since they haven't experienced life in the slightest beforehand.

This is assuming people always have idiot parents who force beliefs. It's common, but it's not all-encompassing.

My mother's dumb in some ways, but when it comes to most things this may encompass (religion, sexuality, what to do in life, etc.), my mother is actually quite open, and I miss not being an adult and high school like hell. I think around 19 or 20, I just... generally started always feeling like crap.

I'm still trying to break through that. It's tough.

As for the parent in the article... wha... I'm amazed the teachers mocked her instead of tried to figure things out.
