God, it seems like all I do here is make birthday or holiday threads anymore. So, what are you doing to save the environment today?

Yeah, same here... though maybe I can count Good Friday abstaining-from-meat as also being for Earth Day, and check off two days at once?

Um, I lit a bunch of candles for Good Friday, does that count as being good for the earth?

I recycled a plastic bottle and some paper bags, but I do that often

I also walked to work, but that's my normal way of getting to work.

As it turns out, recycling paper and plastic is bad for the environment.

When it comes to plastic, the amount of energy required to take the bottle to the recycling center, take it to a recycling plant, make some recycled plastic, take the recycled plastic to a factory, and then turn the recycled plastic into some recycled plastic goods is far more energy than it would take to just make some new plastic. (Recycled plastic goods are also of a lower quality than new ones.)

For paper, it's the same deal, but there's also the fact that the vast majority of new paper comes from trees specifically grown for the production of paper, just like how the vast majority of potato chips are made from potatoes grown specifically to make potato chips (or other potato-based foodstuffs). Therefore, by lowering the demand for new paper by recycling, there will ultimately be fewer trees in existence, as there will be fewer planted to meet the anticipated demand.

We also have plenty of space left for landfills (The United States produces enough trash in 1000 years to use 1225 square miles for landfills, 0.03% of the total area of the country), which create methane gas that is harnessed in the production of said landfills. They can also be turned into places such as parks and golf courses once they are finished.

Due to all of this, I "saved" the environment by not recycling any paper or plastic on Earth Day.

P.S. For those who are curious, recycling glass breaks (no pun intended) at about even with producing new glass, and recycling aluminum takes far less energy than extracting new aluminum, so not all recycling is bad for the environment.

Yo Snigfut, do you have any easy way and or definite proof or link or some such that would work to convince everybody that what you said is true?

Because I wanna slap this in a lot of my friends faces.

It should be noted that in other parts of the world, recycling can potentially be much more essential since they don't have all the resources and/or land the United States has, and they might also have a superior recycling system. As such, I urge you to research your country and/or your friends' countries before you start slapping people.

With that out of the way, this won't convince everyone, and it's really about recycling in the United States, but the episode of Penn & Teller: Bullshit! on recycling should at least make most people think about their stance on recycling while simultaneously being entertained:

Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3

I really think it's best that you do the research (from various sources, even if they're tricky to find on this issue) yourself before you jump to any conclusions, though, but this should at least be a good start.

Huh. I should probably tell people about this. Of course I'll be told BULLSHIT, but still an interesting party topic. :U

Of course, if you really want to help the environment, then you should avoid using disposable containers in the first place, since the production of new and recycled goods alike burns energy and produces pollutants.

If anything, environmentalists should be urging people to reuse, not recycle.

Isn't that what the dreaded "3 Rs" are for? (I remember that was repeated so many times in grade school, yet I forget what the third R is Reduce, maybe? )

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Those R's are on a banner in the main hall of my school.
