Has anyone ever dumpster dived before? If so, what did you find? What you say you find doesn't have to be in a dumpster, it can be in a trash can you looked in.

I have never done it but people seem to find really cool things. One time I found some Monopoly cards in the trash at McDonald's though...

Why does this topic strike me as familiar?

It's nothing bad, but... just wanted to mention it.

Nope. Trash, expecially food waste, grosses me out too much.

Unless you count the occasional diving into my own home trash cans to find something that accidentally dropped in there.

My first printer - HP Deskjet 500, complete with manuals - came from the trash, same for some of the monitors (ex. the first one I had that did 1024x768, a revelation back then) and other PC components I've had over the years. In fact, I think the floppy drive in my desktop right now might still be one of those...

Haven't really looked for trashed stuff recently, but I know a friend of mine still does it regularly. For example, he found my current speakers and amp in the trash, then sold them to me after checking their condition.

If you use coupons and bargins correctly, dumpster diving becomes a waste of money.

You can learn so much through dumpster diving, you won't believe it.

Like, you can find out your neighbors have been using protection. Or something.

I'm from the suburbs- we don't have dumpsters. (Or any sort of trash pickup, for that matter...)

How do you dispose of trash, then, Imajin?

My building has one Dumpster for ordinary trash and 2 for recyclables.

You take it to the dump yourself. Er, excuse me, "recycling and transfer station". I was shocked when I started going to other parts of the country and it turns out trash pickup and such is actually really common- I had thought it was something that you only found in like very dense urban areas.

Though, admittedly, here on campus we do have dumpsters...

Wait, you don't have pickups in your part of the suburbs? Where I grew up, we eventually had trucks with robotic arms coming over every week and emptying your friendly city-issued recycle and trash bins.

We have this too. And they've scheduled different areas of the city for the runs on different days so they can take care of it efficiently. Like our trash is picked up on Thursday but my friend's (clear across the city) is picked up on Friday.

Does a room full of things planning to be thrown away count?

That's how I got my $1 G5. Seriously shocked they'd junk it over a dead battery (which was replaced, but... the thing ran perfectly without changing it).

Huh. My family is in suburban Massachusetts themselves, and my whole life we had trash pickup

So it's not even just the state being weird, it's my town in particular being weird. (But I'm pretty sure the next town over doesn't have trash pickup either, at least...)

I found a perfectly working scooter leaned up against a dumpster in an alleyway. The keys were attached to it as well. I hope someone wasn't parking it there.

I have a feeling that it wasn't. It was sitting there leaned up against the dumpster for three days at least.

Dumpster diving on college campuses at the end of the year is awesome. Students throw so much perfectly good stuff away if they don't want to pack it up. I've found a VCR, a hard drive, Ethernet cables, speakers...

Also Krispy Kreme throws out boxes of donuts every night that, quite often, are in perfect condition. Mmm.

We once found a Sit 'n' Spin and a really nice reclining chair near dumpsters. Also, we've salvaged tons of stuff from side-of-the-road stuff labeled as "FREE."

Also, one time I lost my retainer. I didn't find it, but lots of tissues, hair, and a condom
