I was planning this evening of tea and classical music and candles and reading before bed. The book I was going to read was
American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, which I thought would have been really ironic and hilarious to read because it is totally incongruous with the upscale-ness of the evening, this irony being strangely fitting with the themes throughout the novel.
I ended up with just the book and the chapter I read featured the anti-hero protagonist mercilessly slaughtering a bum on the streets with a knife, all of this conveyed in great detail through the novel's stream-of-consciousness narrative.
What a way to end the day, I thought, and then suddenly I wondered if this was really a great book to be reading before you go to sleep.
Then I went to sleep.
