I've been getting the drawing bug again, just in time for my two week vacation, and I really want to get a lot of practice in. I'm okay at it but I never seem to improve much, probably because I've never tried to do so. I also struggle with using colors effectively. I decided to check out what advice ConceptArt.org has to offer.

Anyway, we have a few artists here, I was wondering how you guys developed your skills. Did you use a lot of tutorials or references? How much of it would you say is natural talent?

Practice/taking what I could get out of art classes. Anatomy especially. That'll get you to learn about how the body works really fast.

I'm not very proud of this fact, but I hate having other people tell me how to draw. This is why I don't like or take art classes. But at the same time, I want to improve. So, every time I ask someone to give me tips, I always end up feeling terrible inside. In fact, for the longest time, I never did pre-sketches, and always felt terrible when I saw other people using them and producing much higher quality work. However, I found something that works for me. By that, I mean I find an artist I really like, one whose style really interests me, and I study it. And practice what I see. Even though I have trouble receiving instruction, I found that reading/watching non-personal tutorials helps as well. In fact, the way I learned to start drawing better heads and do pre-sketches in general was from a video by the guy who does Boxer Hockey.



Sorry if that seems kind of dense, but basically just study artists you admire, be it a classical master or a random guy on the internet.

I really recommend looking at tutorials to get ideas for your art. Also, practice, practice, practice! That's what they all say, but it's true. In fact, try getting a sketchbook and drawing in it every day for a month. Then look back and see how far you've come in just that month alone.

I did that myself and kept a sketch dump on my deviantArt account as I work on my Sonic stuff. Mind you, I'm far from perfect, but the concept is there.

Talk to people, ask them what they think.
Look up basic anatomy. Look up shading, pattern areas, etc.

I just draw what I want, often, and I get better the more I draw.

It's why I can draw chibi style, and females, better than realistic and males. I don't draw the last two that often (But I'm practicing more realistic.)

Studying styles helps a TON too, like Peardian said. Take cues and use them in your own style though. It's how I learned to shade while doing sprites and stuff. Don't blatantly copy or anything, but look at it, and ask "how do they do that" and "Why do they do that" Studying anatomy and shapes works too, just look at something, and draw it, and look at how light reflects off it and stuff like that. (I didn't draw many shapes myself, I just figured them out, but everyone is different, so just do whatever you feel comfortable. )

But the biggest thing of all, is practice. Practice makes you better at everything. I don't draw now as much as I used to, but I still draw enough to get better.

Another thing that might help is receiving criticisms. Not flames or baseless praise, but tips and stuff. It's mostly how I fixed my anatomy (sorta) way back when. "The arms are a bit too thin" etc. Sometimes you'll get criticisms on things you noticed yourself, which will help you notice them sooner next time.

Do you have any copies of your early pixel art pieces that you can compare your current stuff with? I was just checking out your gallery at pixel joint and you have come a really long way. but I'm sure you know that.

The oldest I can think of are my submissions at PureZC

loose tiles and this really bad tileset (Ignore that roguelike set in loose tiles: its a recent addition)

I thought all of those were incredibly awesome back when I made them.
