I think it's more to do with hepatitis than with HIV itself actually. Men are at a higher risk of carrying it than women; and they already do a HIV test on the blood anyways just in case. So I'd say it's the hepatitis aspect.
Still a pretty pointless rule though.

上手に生きられますように・・I can hardly get my blood analysed for myself, with passing out and not getting enough and whatever, so no. Apparently there was once some talk about me being anemic or something but I guess I wasn't.
But yeah... I'm O- to boot, so not only I don't give blood, I'd end up requiring a very rare type.

上手に生きられますように・・Originally posted by paulguy Why are you people so afraid of needles? It's ridiculous. They barely hurt. When doctors have taken blood or shot up stuff, I haven't minded.
It is irrational fear. A phobia isn't "I'm afraid of this because X", it is something triggering primal safety instincts. There's no reasoning behind it.
An spider isn't going to do much harm in most cases and you could squash it relatively easilly, yet a lot of people literally can't, because their instinct tells them to flee.

| i tried to, but there's a bit of a situation regarding hepatitis b. even though i'm immune, i had to have lived away from home for at least 2 years to donate
Originally posted by Terra I don't have much trouble with needles either, really. It's just a brief prick and then I barely feel anything. I hated them when I was a kid, though.

| | | | | I've donated blood before with the United Blood Services here in Nevada. That process is fairly simple. They poke you, the red stuff comes out into a bag and you're done. They have snack packs for you to eat and juice drinks so you keep up your strength afterwards.
I've also donated plasma before, too. This they actually pay you for it since its a lengthier process. Taking up to 45 minutes. They stick you just like donating blood, but you're tube is hooked up to a machine. This machine draws your blood, extracts the plasma, then recycles your blood back in to you. The bag fills up with a yellow liquid (plasma) and then you get paid. We did this a lot in Florida when we were tight on cash (my brother and I). You could donate twice a week, the first time was something like $20, then each time after that was $10 up to the fourth time then it was $25. I think there was some bonus on your birth day, too.

There was a "Give blood" thing at college a few days ago, which I refused. I can't think of a good reason to not give blood. I just don't want to. I feel bad.

True but Hema-Quebec (the gouv agency who run blood donations here) plans on changing soon. It was planned for 2010 but there's a lot of politics involved. The question is not if you're gay or not but if you had anal sex.
I give every 110 days and only red blood cells (500mg, double the normal donation here) since I'm a Rh O neg person.
Pretty high tech stuff

But I probably will when I'm older |
