Anybody here ever donate blood at a blood drive before? We have a blood drive at our high school two or three times a year. I turned 16 in November so I ended up donating today. It feels really good to know that you could potentially be saving someone's life.

The procedure basically goes this way, if you don't know. You go down to the representatives and fill out some sheets of info. It's just simple health questions like, "have you ever done drugs not prescribed by your doctor?" questions like that. Before hand you should always drink at least one bottle of water if not more. Orange juice is also pretty good. So I had a rich, grain filled breakfast with orange juice, and drank three bottles of water during the school day before I gave blood. They have tons of juice and sandwiches and water there for you if you haven't. Then they give you a test where they just ask your weight, measure your blood pressure, and then poke you with a needle to get blood from the tip of your finger. Honestly, that's the worst part of the experience, and it feels like a little pinch. Seriously, it doesn't hurt. Then they prop you up on a chair, give you a stress ball, and start pumping your blood. Basically you do the work because even though it flows naturally from the tube, when you squeeze the stress ball it comes out at a better rate. I just squeezed every five seconds or so.

It's a fun experience. I got to miss class and hang out with my friends whilst helping save lives. Then when your done they have you rest and eat a little bit to get your blood going again. People say it makes you feel light headed, or that you'll be tired the rest of the day, but I didn't find that to be true. As long as you stay active, avoid heavy lifting, and exercise your arms a bit during the day you'll be back to normal in about an hour or two.

So, have any of you guys ever donated blood before?

Nope. I'm too skinny. I'd probably pass out from anemia. I weigh only 115 lbs yet am 5'9". People have a hard time drawing blood from me just to get a sample, let alone donating it...

Nope.

I'm not sure if lesbians are allowed to donate blood. Gay men usually aren't.

For a while I was on medication that remained in the blood stream, so I was ineligible... I think enough time has passed now that I could donate in theory, but I haven't.

Terra - Lesbians can. It's only gay men because of some disease that only spreads between gay men. I can research this more and get back to you on it.

But I donate a lot, whenever I can.

I used to every two weeks. I had to stop while I was pregnant last year, and I never really picked it up again. I should probably start. I've got a whole cork board filled with donation pins

Nope.

A small sample isn't so bad, I assume it can't be too much worse than a vaccine, but actually taking a normal, large sample? The idea freaks me out.

I would like to know my blood type, though, 'cause my parents don't seem to know themselves.

Not yet. They did it in high school but I was too young all four years to do it (They did it in April or something, and I was born in May ), and in college it always feels like it was announced at the last minute so I can't schedule the time to do it.

I never knew what mine was either. My parents think it's A or O.

I'm an O, but I'm not sure whether it's positive or negative. This is supposed to be the most common blood type which I honestly think is kind of lame. I'm so jealous of my boyfriend and his AB blood type.

Hey, me too.

I'm also uncomfortable with needles, so I probably wouldn't give blood even if I could.

I'm surprised to see this thread, I was just now looking up where the nearest Red Cross is, and trying to find out if they use our blood for the victims of Japan. I can donate again on the 18th. I'm really uncomfortable with having a tube in my body, but I can tough it out for five minutes. I'm too small for double red cell donations though.

O+ is the most common, O- is much less so, and is the most helpful.
This sums it up:

Oh, okay.

Is the positive/negative the Rh factor of the blood, then?

It would make a lot of sense if it were as that would explain why O- is significantly rarer.

I donated blood once, but during both that experience and nearly every other one where a large-ish needle was required to be inserted into me, the person inserting it had considerable difficulty performing their task successfully.

Perhaps I just have terrible luck, but I've decided to avoid these situations if possible from now on.

I'm not sure, but all the negative blood variations are rarer than their positive counterparts.

Yep.

Also, they're about 15% of White populations, 1% of Blacks, and almost 0% of Asians. Someone with Rh- blood visiting, say, Japan, may have a world of trouble getting a blood transfusion.
