I know, this seems totally silly, but I've been recently thinking about the importance of scent with regards to interior design/home decoration. To me, a home shouldn't just be visually appealing; it should also smell nice, too. You could definitely rectify this with aerosol fragrance spray cans or dispensers, but I always found that solution to be overwhelming.

This is why scented candles are really cool, because they don't make you choke, and they're also candles so you can use them for super romantic purposes. Like fucking to the scent of vanilla cupcakes.

I don't know about you guys, but I always make it a point to stop by the candle stores whenever I'm at the mall—there seems to be one in almost every single shopping center nearby. If I'm not there to buy candles (or candle-shaped, flavored lip balm! it's the best ever), I at least get to stop by and sample all the different flavors. It's always such a pleasure...

I hope someone who feels similarly reads this since I totally made myself out to be a candledork with this thread.

I love scented candles, and I own a couple...or at least, I did, I don't know where they're at, they might have got lost during the move. I use Glade plug-in cartridges myself a lot to freshen up my room, but only certain ones. Its a necessity since I keep two aquatic reptiles in close proximity to my bed

Paulguy's Post configuration
Scented candles are alright but sometimes the flavors can be rather nauseating. I honestly don't prefer the "baked goods" flavors since they tend to be too sweet, but I honestly like the somewhat bready scent from baking. Some floral scents can also be very sharp, rather than smelling just clean or refreshing.

Also, they should never be used to cover up other odors, because then you end up with fruity cat crap smell, and the flavor usually needs to be overwhelmingly strong to be useful in that way.

I have a rather weak sense of smell and I tend to not even notice when something smells bad. I never bothered with candles.

If we want a good smelling house we just cook something up. Most of our house's good scents are from the array of flowers we tend to grow during summer too.

But we do have a few scented candles amongst the many plain ones. Though oddly I prefer the unscented.

Scented candles cause me to cough and hack. The best scent to me is none at all, or perhaps the scent of vinegar.

Why vinegar? My parents used to boil that whenever someone in the house was sick and I thought it was the most awful thing ever.

My house always smells like strawberries, because there is always at least one scented candle burning in each room.

They can be rather nice. But over time, the smell tends to be annoying.

I don't know, really. Other people are also repulsed by it. But all I can think of is how delicious it tastes, as long as it is a decent vinegar smell and not some of that cheap stuff.

I can't seem to find any that are strong enough to notice. I suppose I can attribute it to the fact that I just simply get used to the smell over time. Can anyone recommend any strong brands?

My parents use Yankee Candle, I tend to have a pretty bad sense of smell usually but they always seemed pretty noticeable to me.

I don't mind scented candles, myself. My parents use them to cover up smell from the cats, which seems to work pretty well.

It's interesting to read this thread--I guess I have an overpowered sense of smell, because usually I am coughing and gagging from being within even 20 feet of the candles.

Then again, when car exhaust gets in my room, I can often smell traces of it days later, even when I've opened the windows.

I love how scented candles smell, but I never got around to actually having one.

Mainly since my room is mostly paper. X_X

I love the smell of some candles, but I never actually bought one for myself.

Maybe if I'm lucky and I go back to the candle store in the mall, I'll buy a small thing of the Fluffy Towels scent that I fell in love with when I was there with a friend of mine.

I laughed out loud at that. Not a good idea in the middle of the night, mind you, but still...

I actually prefer smelling the scented candles in stores without them being lit. The candles themselves don't make a difference to me, but some of them are pretty potent by themselves.
