Mass transit always moves too slowly, FI.

Here, they're digging a few miles of subway line and building 3 stations, and they're expected to take a total of 8 years.

Seattle mass transit has smart cards. They cost $5 one time, but it's worth not having to worry about having exact change, IMO.

I want to move to Bethesda (where my boyfriend lives) - that place is so amazing

It looks very nice and clean and it's a metro ride away from D.C.

We finally got smart cards the other year and they're extremely convenient. Plus I can load the next month's pass onto the card 10 days before the 1st!

I just want decent public transportion near where I live period. The only half-decent system is the bus system, and there simply aren't enough buses to go around. That and I live too far away from the system to effectively use it. ;(

Well, I have two possible routes with SEPTA: Philadelphia or King of Prussia. And from Philadelphia I can go to pretty much anywhere on the east coast (as south as Virginia).

But there are some very nice places here in PA that I can't go to by bus (like state parks) so there's a lot I'm missing without a car.

Then again I'm assuming smart cards are card that can have money loaded into them indefinitely so long as the card doesn't get FUBARed. In that case they were here since at least 1998.

That's how they work here. You can load both money and monthly passes onto the card.

That's how they work here. You can load both money and monthly passes onto the card.

That's how it works in Boston as well... though you still have to use the paper tickets on the commuter rail. (but you can use commuter rail monthly passes to get subway rides too)

Detroit probably lacks them too, considering they barely have any mass transit to begin with

When I was there, they used paper fare cards/passes or just cash.

The Bus system in Bangor uses tickets. While it's true that cards are used, we just kind of flash our MaineCard or bus pass and that's it.

We don't let people load cash onto cards. Either single tickets or weekly/monthly passes.

Of course, some people who live outside of Montreal might have a local transit pass PLUS a commuter train pass on there too.

The Boston system is the opposite- they're very big on trying to get you to load, say, 5.00 (stupid dying laptop keyboard won't type the dollar sign) when the actual price for a single ride is 1.70 or 1.25.

I can understand that if certain rides cost different amounts. Here it costs the same for a bus and subway ride, and you can transfer between the two systems using the same ticket. So we don't really need to work on a credit system (thankfully).

Seattle bus fares are rather complicated. Basically, they're trying to soak daily commuters, so the fare is higher Mondays through Fridays from 6-9 and again from 3-6. This is then even higher if you cross a "zone boundary", like if I were to go from Seattle to one of the Eastside suburbs.

wow, you guys are sounding like you're gettin gyped. All you need in calgary is a $54 pass ($62 for adult) and you have unlimited transit use for the entire month. This includes the LRT and Buses.

They do both here, actually. Buses will run more frequently, but the fare will be higher, and monthly passes that allow for peak-time travel cost more, too, so don't think you can skirt the system with a monthly pass.
