Yeah, yeah, I know we already have the unused power-ups, but I dug up a few more bits. I'll upload the first and the last tomorrow morning. The second one I need verification on.



Apparently the game was supposed to write "Pause!" over your score when you paused the game. It doesn't do such a thing.



I'm pretty sure this is the head of the boss of level 5. I know the boss doesn't bother to look toward you, and there's no further animation for it to suggest turning its head was a possibility (unless it glares directly at you when you get killed by it).



And finally, graphics to suggest that Parasitis in the intro was supposed to be animated! It isn't, obviously, or I wouldn't be pointing this out to you. Parasitis isn't even animated in the Japanese version. I'm baffled as to why they wouldn't since this game is bloody Nightmare Fuel anyway and they pulled out all the stops on making it freaky.

That Natsume Logo is not used in the American version. I'm not sure about the Japanese version...I'll have to download a ROM and check it.

PAUSE!: Definitely not used.

(That reminds me, the US version uses a really bizarre and terrible-looking font in level 2 that's nowhere to be found in the Japanese version. I had this game as a kid, and always wondered why the score digits suddenly went goofy after beating the first boss. )

Robot head: You have to wait a while to see this one. If you get that horrible claw monster thing stuck to your face, and have a horizontal-only weapon, you can't move up far enough to hit the boss' head...so it eventually detaches and starts floating around the room. That frame is used when it turns around to shoot you from behind.

Creepy Parasitis mouth: Huh, never noticed that one. Definitely not used.

That's not your imagination, the fonts change! Interestingly enough, they seem to go in minor states of changes every level. Just look at it in YY-CHR and use the >> button to change the page thing. You'll see it.

It...really makes no sense.

You mean after you kill the dog looking skeleton thing? I never noticed that before now. Weird.

This isn't unused but I thought it was strange how the princess appears nude at the end of the Japanese version. That is if she is supposed to be a princess. I always sort of wondered if the storyline was changed at all for the US.

As far as I'm aware, not really. I guess the story would be in the instruction book or something, to which case we'd have to get someone to translate it. No surprise with the nude lady getting censored for us though. No boobies for us!

Of course, that's the only thing I can think of that gets censored in a game that's full of guts and nightmare fuel, so... o.o

Also, I need to find a way to get that Parasitis mouth animated to a speed that it would probably have been animated at for the wiki, and not something that makes Parasitis look like the words smiley.

Updated the wiki with the Natsume logo and the score digits. Most of the differences of the score text are minor (as in stray pixels here and there), but Level 2 is completely different. Perhaps they were toying around with fonts during development?

I also know the title screen is a bit different and that the gal you rescue is naked in the rescue cutscene. Dunno about other regional changes though. I'll have to play through the Japanese version and see if I can find anything further.

Well, I didn't find it in a cursory search, but here are two sites that might help you in the future when you're looking for Japanese game manuals. The first does not have scans, but instead has manually typed information on the controls and story, taken from the manuals for games of various platforms. It did not have a story section for Abadox, just controls.

I'm not surprised that anything was found for Abadox. To begin with, it's an obscure game in the U.S., and I don't even know how well it sold (or is even known) in Japan. I'm sure that an instruction booklet exists, but it's going to be really, really hard to find. I'll take a look soon but I'm just expecting to come up empty handed.

I am going to play the Japanese version through and see if I can find any notable differences though, probably shortly.

This is just a little thing I noticed, technically not in-game- as the article notes, the Japanese version has a slightly different title screen with more drips at the bottom... those drips also seem to be present in the American boxart.

My thought was that because of the title screen adjustment or some such, they just kind of forgot to put the drips back on. I mean, if they screw up pointers to enemy graphics and a piece of a spaceship, it wouldn't surprise me that they neglected to stick stuff in the bottom too.

An umpteenth-time look in the graphics files shows some drips, but I'm not sure if those belong to other points or not, and I won't know until I get a full arrangement. I'll play with it later when I'm not having to pack up and go at any moment.
