Mmmm, good point. So posting stuff that's unused in unreleaed games is okay though, right?

Speaking of Equinox, there's an example of a situation where wild speculation and rumors ended up damaging the game's reputation somewhat. Somehow, somewhere, somebody started a rumor that the game was supposed to be a real RPG with towns and people to talk to. Because I have that Equinox Shrine on my site, people who write reviews of this game have a tendency to link to it in their reviews, so I end up finding them via my site tracker. A lot of these reviews (almost all of them in fact) complain about how the game was supposed to have towns and people, but doesn't, and therefore it sucks.

However, I have *never* seen any actual evidence that the game was ever intended to have towns and NPCs. I have seen no interviews with programmers/developers where this was mentioned. I have found no unused graphics in the ROM that could be used for towns or NPCs. I have seen no early development screenshots that show any towns or NPCs. Solstice, the game it was a sequel to, did not have towns or NPCs (which, oddly, didn't seem to hurt its reputation one bit).

One time somebody sent me a rather ecstatic email claiming he'd found unused text in the ROM that absolutely proved the game was supposed to have towns because he thought it was NPC dialogue. It turned out to be just the text from the opening scrolls/demos that play if you just keep leaving it at the title screen without pressing start, which was doubly ironic since I already had that mentioned on my site for years by then.

I really need to get off my ass and finish that Shrine so I can put up a rumor-quelching section on this...

I don't see how. Unreleased games are actually right up our alley; it's just that, instead of part of the game being cut, it's the whole thing.

This mostly applies to unreleased games for which a dump exists, not just "unreleased with no release at all". e.g. Bio Force Ape is OK because we have the ROM (just, not released), while something like Hellraiser NES wouldn't since as far as anybody knows it was never actually available.

I could always make up a nice list of these too, whereas I have just about anything I can think of that's publicly available just out of my own hunting around.

I actually got curious about the whole Unreleased games thing, as I had no real idea how to go about it, much less categorizing it. I think that it should be its own big section instead of just shoving them in with the same released games as well (such as mixing in Escape from Atlantis with Mega Man 3 and Shadowgate).

I just noticed the Pokemon Red/Blue page already has pre-release screenshots, so it could serve as an example for any future such pages. Check it out and see if you like it.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
