All right, people with 1920 x 1080, is this picture big enough?

Also, I don't have a 1920 x 1080 monitor, so I'm curious what it looks like to you guys.

Finally, is it too big size wise?

The image looks fine for me... but I must say I think the old one was fancier!

Well, this particular photo looks best if you can see most of it. The problem is people with ginormous 1920 x 1080 monitors will be jinxed if this was shrunk to a more sane resolution.

Edit: How about some color then?

Looks fine to me on 1920x1080. I don't see any repeating or anything wrong with it.

mmm, that really adds some more spirit to it! =)

Looks fine on my resolution, however, my screen is rather small. :p

Yeah, I figured this time, I'd scan the image at 1600 DPI, therefore negating the issue with repeating.

I was also surprised to discover that leaving the color in made the image smaller. JPG must be more efficient when allowed to have the larger pallete and less dithering.

JPG should be more efficient on grayscale than full color. How exactly are you converting to grayscale? (And what's this talk of dithering and palettes? You shouldn't be using either with JPG.)

Well, with this one I reduced the pallete (and thus dithering came into play), but as you said, that didn't work out, so I just went full color. (It actually made the image LARGER file-size wise, because JPG isn't meant to compress that.)

Grayscale would probably make it even smaller, but with this image, it appears it is the colors that make it stand out, not the shapes, so the colors will stay in this one.

Scrolling down this page is a trip. First it's a window to a mountain vista, but then it's space, and then mountains again, and then bizarro cube land!

It's a nice background. I wasn't sure if the color would make it harder to read or not, but it seems fine.

However, do keep in mind that the larger the image, the longer it takes to re-draw the background, which will cause lag on less powerful computers. Orlandu's bg does this to mine somewhat, for instance.

The secret to that is the hacked-in transparency using PNGs. It works much better than trying to set it via CSS or something.

Yeah, partially why I wanted to see if anyone with slower computers was dying from it. It's kind of a 50-50 thing, because shrinking it too much will make it either JPG artifact-filled or repeat on supermassive 1920 x 1080 screens.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
