hating something just because it's new is utterly idiotic and i have a lot of contempt for people who do that

The problem is that the whole concept of "web 2.0" perpetuates these design problems.

For example, look at how many sites use jQuery for everything - there are even several that load the entire page content dynamically. As in, you get a navbar and logo, and the page is a whole separate request.

Which means that if you disable Javascript -- as I tend to do pretty often, and (obviously) as a lot of indexing robots do -- you get nothing. You get a blank page. It also means that if something doesn't load, you have to refresh the entire page and hope that everything loads this time, because instead of having all the content in one request (with images/styling separate), you get... surprise, just "Loading, please wait". On a bad connection? Sorry, fuck you. Have fun reloading the page 20 times to get everything to work right.

The fun of Ajax doesn't stop there, since it's not a real page transition your back/forward buttons don't work, either. Entering a form? Better hope you can remember everything you entered, since if they don't give you a back option, well, you're screwed! Surprise. Oh, and want to link to a page? Better hope they're not using that retarded "hashbang" shit that seems to be floating around, because (surprise) if you have Javascript off, that page will never, ever know that you even have that tag... and even if you do, it's going to load all the initial content anyway until it goes "Oh, there's a hashbang here, I'd better load this page instead".

As an added bonus, the idea of keeping everything on one page and never having anything else means that if a bug appears, it'll always be there on your screen I had a New Twitter (urgh) window open that had about 4 floating username tooltips that wouldn't go away unless I refreshed. Pretty great, really.
It's not like problematic technologies are anything new. (Hello, Java! Hello, Shockwave!) Honestly, it's not bad technologies that make bad websites, it's bad designers and coders. And there are plenty more of them now than ever before, now that so many people have computers with decent Internet access.

No man, totally serious, youtube has never given me problems aside from loading slowly sometimes, which is completely understandable considering how huge they are.

And Facebook works fine too, there's some minor design faults but those aren't really web 2.0 flaws per se.

Now all the Facebook like buttons on such on other sites are kinda annoying sure, but Facebook itself just works for me.

the worst web 2.0 thing is deviantart.

ALLOW ME TO LOAD AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PAGE BEFORE I LOAD THE PAGE YOU WANTED TO SEE

edit:
also, re: facebook, twitter

twitter: I dont see what the big deal is, i barely noticed a difference between the two looks

new facebook profile: its a clutterfuck of awful. I honestly have no idea how it got released, I would like to meet the designer of it and ask him with a straight face, "What the fuck?"- I'm very close to believing its a social experiment to see if you say things are great, people will just say "oh hey new shiny thing" and take it in the ass even though its complete trash

Oh jesus, yes Setz, dA is a good example of Web 2.0 gone HORRIBLY WRONG.

Buttons at different places depending on how you opened a picture, never knowing where exactly you are, or where you'll land after clicking a link, changes not coming through.

All in all, fucking awful.

WANT TO ENLARGE THIS PICTURE? OK, LET ME LOAD ENOUGH JAVASCRIPT TO MAKE 4 PICTURES IN WEIGHT.

Facebook has been notoriously glitchy for me ever since the latest profile format switch, and I don't much care for how everything is clumped together. I agree YouTube WORKS, but again, it feels a lot more cluttered and less easily accessible than the previous format

if you think dA is bad on a PC, try loading it from a mobile device or something. It absolutely murders my poor nokia n800

but yeah, i am usually very detached from social websites, which get all the 2.0 makeovers, so it doesn't bother me most of the time. The facebook thing just offends me from a designer's perspective, I have no idea what they were thinking

It persists because too many people feed into the absurdity of sites like Facebook, Twitter, and the like.

Admittedly, I do YouTube and deviantArt, but I joined before it became "Web 2.0". Honestly, I hate half the people that comment on my YouTube videos because they're fucking idiots. The other half have some amount of sense to them. But just...the people who just post uselessly persists and I just grow more disinterested the more I see them. It's just...ugh, dammit.

He Web 2.0 is here to stay. Why discourage it? There has always been gimmicks and retards on the internet, web 2.0 is just another phase of that. Do you really want to go back to layouts like this run on a 56k modem again? Hey .gifs man, those things are cool.

This.

Ugh, developers, can't you set your font bigger than 8-point? Especially when there are those huge empty borders on each side that take up like half the page width and a navigation pane and ads galore. Nix the blank borders and make the text bigger, dammit.

Also, I hate when Web sites split everything into multiple pages which are each very small. I find it much easier to use the scroll wheel than to click on the tiny icon for the next page, and with everything on one page it's a lot easier to search for text, too.

Eh, can't completely blame developers (though for javascript abominations you can), they're often under the control of some designer under the influence of trends and marketing. I try my best with what they want. :p

It's amazing how many web sites want to load over a dozen scripts from all over the place. Your typical news site will want to load scripts from doubleclick, facebook, fbcdn, google-analytics... ugh. Even if you automatically allow scripts from the same domain as the page your viewing to run, some sites still don't work without a bit of tweaking.

I suppose the days of mostly-static pages are gone, though.

I've noticed this as well since I started using NoScript... it really seems unnecessary in a lot of places, where I just have to keep blindly allowing things because "arbitrarioncdn" turns out to be the video I wanted to see or something. (maybe that's part of the point, though... it's certainly one way to fight against NoScript and things of that sort, I suppose)

I never understood the whole "STATIC IS EVIL" thing. For pages that rarely or never get updated, static text and HTML is certainly the best and most efficient way to go. I guess they want to show off their script-making skills.

People are becoming addicted to connection. I wonder if anyone twitters that they're using facebook, or vice versa. One of my classes this semester is actually about the culture of the internet and how it's affecting people. It seems people like giving out their input, whether or not people actually care and regardless of how important it is. It's one thing to have a discussion about your opinion of something. It's another thing to tell everyone what you're doing at the moment and submit pictures of kittens to the news station.

It is always fascinating to see how people freak out when they don't have internet. Surprising as it may seem, I can just walk away after having noted to my IRC channels/forums I'm going and then just leave it at that. The internet is a tool, I'll talk to people IRL if it were to suddenly vanish/will wind up talking to people IRL in time anyway.

IIRC, one of my old Facebook friends said to check their Twitter for something witty they said, or something of the like. I have since unfriended them, but for other reasons, so i do not know if their madness continued.

Truthfully, I am addicted to the internet, but for far different reasons than just simply "I'm addicted to a site".

Admittedly though, for living around here, I really need to have it around or else I sit around bored all day with barely anyone to talk to.
