While browsing Sonic Retro I noticed that they use images for buttons in cheat codes etc., in order to better differentiate that from text.

I thought that was a pretty neat idea, so I started making my own, very (VERY) loosely based on the ones from Final Fantasy 7.


Thoughts? Suggestions? Is this a good idea or something that's been previously shot down?

In all honesty, I think this is a very good idea, but the images need to be named to something that can be accessed really quickly, kinda like our smileys here. I'm sure one of the wiki people could do that?

The idea was, like Retro, to use templates for quick insertion, like, I dunno, {{SNES-B}}.

I'm not sure whether to use these system-specific button sets or to make just one generic set, though.

Also, I still need to do generic D-Pad buttons. And yes, I've darkened the SNES yellow button to make the letter more legible.

What do you mean based on FF7's? Does it have button icons? I can't remember, sorry. This seems like a great idea, though!

The US version at least had icons in the font for the Playstation controller's buttons, for use in dialogue. I used an arcane and painful VRAM viewer to rip them and used them as a base.

Should they be larger? (Or maybe even in multiple sizes... though I don't know if I like the idea of having to remember to use something like {{PSXTriMid}}, {{PSXTriSmall}}, etc. I don't know how large they could be before they begin to screw up the text formatting, at any rate.

(Now that everyone probably has HD monitors and their resolutions at 1920xWhatever , who knows how small they have their text set? I think my monitor's set to 1280x, but I still had to squint a little to make out some of those buttons. )

Hm, I had some size concerns, but looking at TCRF (I use Firefox 3.6.x, my settings are close enough to the default) a capital letter is about 10 pixels high, and the buttons seem to be about 11 pixels high, so they should look good enough inline... They look good, too.

I would highly recommend making the SELECT and START icons longer so you can fit in the full word. This includes the N64 START icon.

For a long time I've planned on adding in a special tag (<button>) that would have its own syntax and allow for managing this kind of stuff automatically, like so:

<button>+A,reset,-A,+B,start</button> -> Hold A and press reset, release A, hold B and press start (obviously written a bit better).


But yeah, button icons was on the list of things to do.

That might be interesting. How would it accommodate instances like pressing A+B at the same time, or pressing Reset 47 times, though?

Had a weird thought - is it theoretically possible to create a Flash video of each individual controller, pass it a (specially formatted version of a) code, at which point it'll flash the proper pad/button sequence? (No, I'm not recommending it for TCRF... I'm just curious if it's technically possible.)

I'd still probably have to refrain from wanting to 2X scale the button/pad images if I used them, though.

You can pass variables to Flash objects, so it is possible.

Hmm, interesting. I'll have to remember that for if and when I ever do get around to experimenting with Flash.

Back to the topic at large... how about something (templates) like this?

{{systemCode|text}}

...for example, the old Konami code might end up being represented this way:

{{NESCode|Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, then press Start.}}

The template would parse the text, replacing Up/Down/Left/Right/B/A/Start with the relevant images, and print out the rest of the text (the commas, period and "then press") as-is. Each of the images would also have alt-text explaining what pad/button-press they are, just to be sure (well, okay, those of us with bad eyesight... ).

There would be variants, of course; PSXCode, SNESCode, etc.

Maybe use a plus sign, i.e (A) (B)+(C) (A), if that makes sense? It could be done with the graphics if consistency is a necessity.
