That raises a valid point, Colin. What happens if a homosexual soldier is sent to a country like Afghanistan where homosexuality is illegal?

I had a lot of relatives who went into the military. Some were just draftees, but my dad and my mom's dad both spent decades in the military. I was basically expected to join

Ah yes, thank you for reminding me that being in the army poses the risk of me getting sent to the Middle East. America isn't Finland!

On the subject of having costs covered, I've learned that if I join the Royal Navy, they will put me through university and/or medical school and they'll pay for it. The tradeoff is that I'd have to spend some years in the Navy.

It's worth contemplating...

They said in the news here that the majority of people in the German army come from East Germany, and if you compare the populations of East and West Germany you notice the totally weird proportions.

Usually it's attributed to the fact that there are no jobs in East Germany so people go to Afghanistan to earn their pennies.

Wow, 21 (?) years since reunification and they're still fucked over there?

I've never been to the former DDR, so I never got to compare it to the former West Germany. I've heard it's bad there, though.

East Germany doesn't even have any teams in the top soccer league of Germany (Bundesliga). That's how screwed they are right now; no resources to contend with the top teams.

Remember that the difference between a conscript army and a paid army is vast. (and any army in general, actually). Finnish army is pretty much the easiest army in the world. We're not in any conflicts, it's voluntary (you can go for civil service) and only lasts for a year max.

I'm not a fan of conscription myself. I'm glad the USA did away with it. I do find it interesting that many countries with conscription rarely fight in wars, though. Like, Swiss males have to train in their army for many years, and when's the last time you heard of Switzerland being in a war?

Also, I'm rather opposed to the assumption that everyone who was born with a penis is automatically an ideal masculine soldier

Main reason why we still have conscription is colored with orange. (it's not a secret)

We have armies, because we want to protect our own countries. Even if Switzerland hasn't been in an war it doesn't mean it would stay that way forever.

Switzerland has it in part because in most wars, they wind up fighting against all sides.

See: WWII, where they shot down Axis and Allied plans for getting in their territory.

Though I guess in this case more of a chaotic neutral.
