So I was looking through a Wikipedia page on a band and saw a link with an urgent message from the Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales:

Thats a steep goal if you ask me. And only 2 1/2 weeks of 2010 left? That's asking a lot. Just thought it was interesting and I would point it out. I don't feel the urge to donate even though I use a lot of Wikipedia pages.

It's been parodied and made fun of pretty much relentlessly. I got so sick of it I blocked the damn message.

I guess the custom wiki sites I go to have been blocking it, too. How long has it been up there?

Really, they put too steep goals. Although I have to say, they had a bit of bad luck since now Assange is all over the news and the kind of people who read Wikipedia would much rather donate to him instead.

While they need money, I think they should stop bugging people about it now that they have 9.6 mil+. I mean, they'll survive, and in the meantime they can always remain open to more donations.

Hm, they went back to Wales... for awhile it seemed like they had given up on having Wales advertise and had other people.

Speaking of Assange, I find it kind of amusing that Wikipedia sees it as necessary to have a page solely to let people know they are not WikiLeaks...

The whole "we don't want ads" thing is bullshit.

I swear they'd get money much faster that way.

On the other hand, they'd no longer be a not-for-profit organization if they use ads. So it doesn't really help.

I somehow doubt that, especially if all of the income from the ads was spent on actually maintaining things and not on personal money.

But then I know almost nothing.

Is $16 million their annual expenses or what? I just worry some of that is being pocketed somewhere.

It'd better be.

Or else this'd be a very sneaky way to gain lots of money. Impressive way, but still a dirty way.

If begging people for free money doesn't work for me in the real world, why should it work for Wikipedia?

Yeah, I'm sick of the messages too.

Hm- PBS has advertising, and they're non-profit. (Though, PBS only runs ads between programs, so maybe there's something about how you present it that websites can't do- and PBS still runs pledge drives too)

I don't know all the legalities, but I'm sure they're allowed to like, promote their own things and show public service announcements.

I wasn't in TV when I went to the New England School of Communications, so I don't really know though. :X

I wonder how those salaries are distributed. It could be that some people high up get pretty fat salaries.

$864,000 on TRAVEL?!?

Someone's gonna punch Jimmy Wales right in the face one day walking down the street. They'll know EXACTLY what he looks like.

Even I don't use that much when I travel, shit. I mean, I can even get my flights for less than $500.

Somehow I'm guessing that chart is fabricated.
