My family usually puts up lights, but nothing that elaborate... usually just some lights (not any LEDs either- I think the strings themselves may predate me, though of course the bulbs get replaced) on the row of bushes in front the house.

We picked up at 400 count of lights for about $10. Lights (at least the non fancy ones) are pretty cheap these days.

The lights we use for our trees (we put up multiple trees, yes) are those twinkle lights. Basically, the bulb itself has some extra stuff in it to make it flash and shimmer in a random fashion, and it looks really cool.

I like LEDs because they're bright, but I don't like the 60hz flicker. I've got a few strands at home that look like LEDs (the lights are short, round, and stubby), but they don't have the flicker. I want to figure out what they are if they aren't LED, because they shine with really brilliant colors.

My mom is the main Christmas decorator around our house, and she has a tendency to like white lights. I like the colorful lights though, so I think when I have my own place, I'll probably have colored lights around Christmas time.

There's no reason they have to flicker, they're just cheaply manufactured, and lack filtering, and probably don't use a proper bridge rectifier most of the time.

In my experience mostly only the cheap brands flicker.

Also what's with white lights costing near twice as much as coloured ones. That not only makes no sense, but seems backward...

All LEDs use a semiconductor material that produces light at one specific frequency. White is light that covers a large part of the spectrum, so a plain LED can't produce white. Most white LEDs are a combination of a blue LED and a yellow phosphor. Whether this added phosphor is worth the price hike is debatable.

Mixed with wreaths and Christmas brush type things, you know the stuff you put atop a fireplace or on a mantel, we usually have Christmas lights. Sometimes out side on trees in our yard, but their mostly inside.

The price hike is probably not so much the Christmas light manufacturer as much as the semiconductor manufacturer.

My family's house Christmas 2010.

If I showed you a full-yard view, there would be even MORE lights.

If I was your neighbour, I'd just have an arrow pointing to your house with the word "Ditto" written on it

Nope, only a slightly decorated tree indoors, that's it. Nothing outside, and nothing around the neighborhood. People don't care for xmas anymore

Here's a house that we drove to that isn't too far from my in-laws.

Ditto for my block. It's like we were the only ones to decorate this year! D:

Oh god! That looks so awesome! I don't think I'd ever go through the trouble of putting up all those lights every year ... no way
