Man, the Nether is really, really fun. Going out and hunting for mushrooms and brightstone is amazing! It's intense when you find yourself surrounded by ghasts and you have to improvise a way back to your gate by digging a staircase up through the wall you were cornered into.

I have so much mushroom soup now that it's not even funny. And a few stacks of brightstone dust. (Not making it into blocks until lanterns are added in, considering that lanterns will probably need the stuff.)

Edit: Goddammit you pigmen need to learn about a little thing called PERSONAL SPACE.

I went to the Nether for the first time, too. Even though it's all doomy and stuff, the noises in there just sound so cute.


Unfortunately, I'm in a bit of a tough situation. There are like 8 Ghasts floating where my portal is, which is in a little inset. I can't even stand still after I warp there without being bombareded. I'll probably have better luck if I go prepared with a bunch of wall-building stuff and some weapons. I punched a Ghast in the face.

Those sounds creep the shit out of me. My Nether portal led me to this nice little cave, so I'm pretty safe in there. Got a ton of netherstone or whatever you call it, but goddamn those sounds make me want to kill myself so hard because PARANOID

I decided to exit the cave after getting my fill of stones (I made sure I had absolutely nothing on me by the time I went out). Right behind the cave, a cooing ghast slowly rose up, saw me, went :O and holy fuck flaming snowball coming at me.

It hit me square in the everywhere, and I ran away. I saw a zombie pigman, and I wanted to at least punch one before dying. Just when I was within reach, he walked forward and fell. Turns out the cliff is sort of insanely high, so he's dead.

The ghast was still chasing me and there was another pigman in the distance, along with another ghast. I quickly ran over there (during this whole time, fireballs are a'comin and holy shit they're loud), punched him after missing like three times.

Game over!

The sounds of fireballs crashing, ghasts cooing, and pigmen doing what-the-fuck-ever looming over.

I never use meat. I have so many mushrooms from the Nether that I could make a large chest full if I made it all into soup. But I leave it as mushrooms mostly so I can store it easy. I've never had to kill a pig or harvest wheat in a loooong while.

Additionally, I built a hut around my portal, and since ghast explosions are so weak, the only chance of it breaking cobblestone is if it gets hit in the same place by like 3 fireballs at the same time. Glass is open to destruction, but it rarely gets hit considering the sides with windows overlook a cliff.

The game keeps randomly freezing up on me in the Nether. When I restart, I'm in the same location, with the same item set, but the world has reset to the state it was in the last save. Guess what that means when you're tunneling. Not pleasant.

Yeah, this happens occasionally when the game crashes. It doesn't save your changes to the terrain, but does save your inventory and position changes. Solution: Pause the game once in a while and wait for the "Saving level..." text in the bottom left to vanish. Or just save and quit, I guess.

Only happened to me once, I had minimal losses.

My map has a random chunk of land with a random floating nether portal.

Inquiry on the Minecraft Forums reveals that when you die in the nether, you "exit it" and a portal is created on the real world in the place proportional to where you die.

I wanted to get on the server with you guys, but I guess it's not up right now. So instead, I went adventuring and made a new bow to replace the one the crashing robbed of me. I figured out what causes it, too. The music. Every time it starts playing a song, it locks up. The music is the only thing you can hear, as the burning and moans fade away as the music comes in.

I also found a random portal sitting on the ice, I guess from where I died. Guess where it leads? To my normal portal. So now I have a quick way to warp home!

Ghasts seem to be attracted to mining activity. I was clearing out an area where I only saw one and five minutes into it there were at least nine more there.
