but my laptop's had a really severe cooling issue for the last year or so:

Keep in mind that was with pretty low load (20-30%). Basically, pretty much anything was out of the question.

I'd spent a long time trying to find a solution. The only lead I'd had -- outside of fully replacing the damn fan, which seems to have died -- was this mysterious configuration option in the BIOS I found while reading the mantainence manual for my laptop. Fan Always on while on AC Power!

See, I'd never seen it before. I know it's not there, because I checked!

So, I googled it... and found an issue about someone's laptop, that any time they plugged in their laptop, the fan would spin up, even if there was no reason.

Someone in that thread suggested a tool I'd never heard of, and that hasn't been updated since about 2006, the site even failing to connect the first few times I'd tried.

Speedswitch XP (v1.52).

So, on a whim, I tried installing it.

It's currently at 50 C. Fifty degrees Celsius. Running at about 800MHz, more than enough for browsing the web and listening to tunes, and maybe even enough for emulation.

My grandmother's laptop had the same problem.

HP dv8301nr. Served me well for years up until some idiot fried it by turning off the AC in the room (and the room got really fucking hot)

If only you could take out the $221 and $88, $309 is enough for a new netbook! Woohoo!

Glad to hear your computer is susceptible of random explosions anymore. With my last GPU in my desktop (before I switched to a laptop) it started to get really hot when I played games. Around 110 C which was within the high of 120 C but I just didn't like it running that hot. I bought new thermal compound and new RAM heat sinks for the RAM on the GPU. Brought temps back down to 70 C, still high but better peace of mind.

But yeah, I can relate to computer troubles that just bug the hell out of you but you can't figure out what to do. just last night, I was trying to root my mother-in-law's Android phone. You have to connect it to the PC to run the code to root it so I downloaded the drivers and connected it. Windows wouldn't recognize the phone. I read up on the forum for the root files to see if other people had the same problem and they did. They said try every USB port. So I tried all 4 on my laptop. Nothing. They said try from a non-Windows 7 PC. So I did. Nothing. I tried her laptop, my wife's desktop... nothing. I've never had Windows not recognize a phone in Mass Storage mode... Still can't figure it out but I'm going to try from my work PC since it's Windows XP.

Keep in mind that while it's "solved", it's running at under 50% speed. So... not a perfect solution.

But eh, at least I don't have to worry about it killing itself; I've had it at 50-90% CPU load for the last hours and it's been comfortably parked at 53-55°C.

Hell, I'd rather have an 800mhz stable machine than a 2.1ghz(?) burning machine, myself. Maybe if needed, you could bump the speed up very slightly should more be needed (if possible?) at some point.

Glad to see there's some form of solution, at least!

Paulguy's Post configuration
Well, I imagine you could bring it up a bit, then.

My computer had similar thermal problems just this past week. I had discovered that my CPU was consistently going over 100C and underclocking under load and would idle around 60C, and I don't really know how long it's been doing that. I was using some Intel stock cooler with uh... Arctic silver? thermal compound stuff. The problem improved when I pressed on the frame of the cooler with my fingers against the CPU, so I figured it just wasn't making good contact. It had lame plastic mounting pins, though, so I figured they were probably worn like some material had scraped away and it wasn't pushing against the CPU well enough, because all 4 pegs had been locked and the cooler was as far down as it would go, so I pretty much couldn't do much with that one, so I replaced it with a cooler master 212 plus. It's this absolutely enormous heat sink with a standard 80mm case fan on the side. I honestly didn't think it would be so big, based on the picture, but when I got it, it was huge. It's pretty effective though, and only $30, so it's ridiculous gamer stuff, but at a reasonable price. Construction seems solid enough, it's basically just a bunch of bits of metal not in any position where it'd really be able to fall apart, so can't do wrong there. CPU now idles at or below 40C and under full load all 4 cores get to only about 60C. I probably have a bit of headroom to overclock, but after probably months of overheating that I hadn't noticed, I think the life of my CPU may already be shortened enough. Buuut I'm going on and on about it and don't really want to make it a review, even though I already have, so I'll leave it at that.

Nice to see that your computer isn't in danger of cooking itself anymore.

I went through 2-3 computers over overheating, especially when I had an endless appetite for 3 GHz Conroe P4 processors. I fixed it by getting a new heatsink and an AMD one, which now idles at 40 C and a 31 C core temp.

That said, my laptop melted itself for good, so you're lucky, Xk. Good work on getting that problem fixed partially, at least.

My dad had an overheating problem. For some stupid reason, the fan was OS-dependant, and didn't work on Linux. He had to remove Linux and reinstall Windows XP to get it to work.

Conroe P4? Don't you mean Prescott? Those are the ones known to cook themselves.

Also, that sucks about the proprietary software fan control. There may have been some program or driver you could load to handle it for you, or at least turn it on, or maybe a BIOS option to switch it to hardware control.

Nope. The Prescott lasted for 5 years before the mobo died of old age. The Conroes imploded.

The issue extended to pretty much all the high end intel processors until they moved away from single-core.

Yeah, laptops have been known to be stupid with hardware support. Mine needs a Windows program to disable that damn tap/breathe-to-click, but it only needs to be done once. (It also needs repair I haven't got around to doing...)

I once had to install new touchpad drivers for my old Compaq in order to disable tap-to-click. Ugh.

Usually I just disabled the touchpad entirely, but I'd use it as a backup in case I have no working mouse.

Now, my laptop's a Toshiba sitting on a laptop stand. The temperature goes anywhere between 50°C and 90°C. Right now, I'd say it's around 80°. Especially considering that well, I am using it a bit. (CD running, driving an 1080p DTV off of HDMI, etc.) I think what I need is a can of air.
