This is because they are a massive pain to deal with using standard cash drawers and bill-handling procedures. The drawer doesn't hold very many, and you can't just wrap them in a paper slip and drop them in the safe. At my last job, they would usually just keep piling up until someone had the guts to try and give them to customers.

On top of that, a lot of vending machines and the like still don't accept them.

Retailers and vending machine manufacturers need to make some big changes before society will really accept high-value coins.

There are still far too many people that would refuse to switch entirely to plastic for a variety of reasons. When I was growing up, I was always taught that a cashless society is one of the signs of the end times (related to the "Mark of the Beast"). And you know anti-government conspiracy theorists and privacy advocates would absolutely have a field day with any such proposal.

A week or so ago, my friend found $20 on the ground while I was standing next to him. I was so jealous.

I had six $1s in my back pocket last night. If that was in coin form, my shorts might have fallen down.

Erm, Anya... Canadian $1/$2 coins really aren't that heavy. They're kinda light actually, just larger than quarters.

You could easily have 15-20 in your pocket before problems arose.

Yeah... coins don't weigh much. That'd be silly.

Cash has many benefits over plastic. It's very convenient. You can just give someone a coin and there you go. Instant, completely anonymous, works every time, doesn't depend on any machine or network. You never have to worry that it's just going to vanish due to some glitch, you don't pay a fee to use it, you can easily see how much you have at all times. You can hide it, put it in a birthday card, whatever you like.

I hate when I'm out of cash and have to pay for a $1 item with a card. Takes much longer, holds people up, all sorts of nonsense.

As a Canadian, yes.

So then if I had a US dollar or 'toonie', and granted if they have the same design as Canada's $1 and $2 pieces, they can pretty much be used in both countries.

At Dollar General, I swap any dollar coins for donations of dollar bills to our literacy fund bin. Easiest way to get rid of 'em.

On the topic of physical cash and plastic, I'd say they both have their place, pretty much described here. Physical money pretty much always works and is convenient and doesn't require a place to have infrastructure, or it's possible for individuals to easily hand off money to each other that way. If everyone just had all their money accessible with a card through some bank, everyone would have to have some kind of connection to the bank, and the service is probably not cheap, and if it's a necessity to be able to receive money, it'll be a very expensive service.

Yeah, a lot of US wallets don't have much room for coins, which my dad tends to complain about. I got a rather pricey one in Germany that had a large coin pouch.
