This was written originally back in 1994. I've finally gotten out of my funk to fully rewrite this thing. Inspiration mainly comes from Hiryuu's side project based off of the old SF stories. Also, after seeing movies, shows and even video games and saying, why can't I write again? City of Heroes also plays a huge part in me writing again.

Long back story short, this takes place 10 years before Hiryuu's Element and the Unreal SF saga. Links and more information can be found here. As I said before, this is 10 years before, so all of the characters are much younger and are a bit different before all hell hits the fan. This is also several hundred years after the Crystaltina saga (SF again). I don't want to give too much anyway at the moment and I might just do that if I keep typing here.

I've always found it hard to start off with chapter one, I guess that’s why it takes me forever to work on something. But while I was on the plane coming back home, I had my headphones on and the rest starting to come to me. I felt a bit like Isaac from Heroes, while I was writing. I saw what was actually happening while I was writing. It was great.

Now mind you, I haven't really written anything like this in years, so it might be a bit choppy.

Chapter one finds Jen ("Anya"...but maybe that's giving too much away, huh?) in middle school, normal life and all that jazz. During spring break, while babysitting Miles, an odd phenomenon begins....

-------------------

I'm going to list all of the chapters here so if anyone wants to read them, it'll be easier to find.

Chapter One - Normality Twisted
Chapter Two - Mass Panic
Chapter Three - Malfunctions
Chapter Four - Around the Camp Fire
Chapter Five - OV
Chapter Six - Found
Chapter Seven - The Prologue
Chapter Eight - The Prophecy
Chapter Nine - Forty Days

Daily Cycle II ~ 3079
Thank you for assisting in the destruction of anything resembling "sleep schedule" I ever had.

(Well, maybe not... I just have to forget this post ever exists, until tomorrow, or else...)

Simplicity v1.1
Crap...now I'm gonna be pressed to write 21 at this rate.

That said, looks like we're doing first-person here versus my third-person 'goes around' viewpoint. We'll see how this goes.

EDIT: Read it. I'd say you still got it.

The only things I can think of that can be improved is, like me, the proofreading of common misspellings and punctuation uses (not too many here). I can't really think of anything else more than it's still a little tough for me to read in the first-person when I'm used to writing third. :\ I'd say you've got something though, so I'd be interested to see just how far you plan on taking this...

Chapter two is being typed out right now and I have a little of chapter three started on paper...I just keep getting side tracked because of Halo 3.

Chapter Two has been up for a bit. I haven't been able to work on chapter three yet.

Currently working on chapter three and I added/edited the definitions/bios.

Uhm...

I'm getting a protection problem.

I'm guessing that means I need to get an account now. :\

EDIT: Not even that works...

I've been working on chapter 4 for the most part of the day. I should have it up by the end of today. If not, then tomorrow.

I'll post chapters 1-3 here as well, once I get home.

Chapter One
Normality Twisted

A fire ball files past my left cheek, “Hey, I’m the fire starter, not you!” I call out to my opponent.
“I just want you to have a taste of your own medicine,” he calls back from several feet away.
“Well, you’re going to have to do way better than that sir,” I laugh, dancing a fire ball of my own between my finger tips.
Fireballs and taunting, it is just your normal day on another planet in another galaxy. Of course it wasn’t always like this. Ten years ago, give or take a few, I was back home on the lovely planet known as Earth. I was going to middle school and trying to figure out the simpler things in life, like beating a final boss in a video game. Nowadays I’m physically beating the final boss, along side a few friends that I picked up along the way. Even back then I knew that I didn’t want to be your typical chick: yapping away on the phone at home and trying to find the date for the town fair. I can remember a time when I would lie in bed, wishing I could be far away and grown up. I guess every teenager gets those thoughts now and then.
It seems so long ago, like a distant memory that I can’t grasp my fingers on. What seems normal and real to everyone else, does not apply here. I just have to laugh a little at myself and to everything that has happened thus far. Sometimes I think I’m going to wake up and it’ll be all over.
My name is Anya, 24 years old and I can cast fire spells, among other things, and this is just part of my story...

Yawning, I arch my back, right before turning over, covering my head with the blanket. It's early in the morning and three days before spring break, waking up is something that I am not looking forward to.
I can hear my alarm clock going off again, a commercial for some product. I hit the snooze button again; this would be my third time.
I close my eyes again. It feels like a lifetime since I had any sleep, when in reality, I had a good six hours in dreamland. I can hear my dad in the kitchen and it'll only be a few minutes before he's knocking on my door to wake me up. Might as well make the most of it and sleep in as long as I can.
Five minutes later and there's a knock at my door, right on schedule. I roll over for the twelfth time, and this time around, I get a claw to the face. One of my several cats decided to sleep on the top of my pillow.
"You'll miss the bus," I can hear my dad from the other side of the door.
Throwing the blankets off, I reach down and find a pair of jeans. After putting them on in a sleep-like state, I plop right back into bed.
Yes, this is an ongoing event. I am not, nor will ever be, a morning person. A thought enters my mind, should I have locked the door? Especially now since I can hear it opening, screaming, "I'm up, I'm up!" just before my dad has the chance to use a water gun on me.
    "Are you okay?" he asks.
"Why--oh," touching the scratch on my upper cheek, "apparently the cat tried to wake me up too." The scratch begins to sting a bit.
After getting fully dressed, I grab my backpack and head towards the bus stop. Funny thing is I have to pass another buss stop before I get to mine. A normal person would rather walk a shorter distance, but not in this case. All of the kids, who ride that bus, are from the same trailer park as I, and all of them are a bunch of rowdy kids. I'd rather walk father and ride a bus that would be mistaken for the juvenile bus heading towards the correction facility.
Ten minutes later, I am at the bus stop. Most of the people that ride this bus are already here, it’s a small group, and I get along with pretty much all of them. I really don't hang out with them while in school, but we tend to hang out afterwards and sometimes on the weekends. I really keep to myself at school, usually listening to my tape player or working on an essay for class. I'm not the best student in the middle school, but when it comes to writing essays and taking notes, I'm pretty good.
I throw my headphones on and sit on the edge of the sidewalk while waiting for the bus. Before long, I'm at school and walking past the cafeteria filled with students, as I turn the corner to hang out at the same area I normally do, a can of soda passes me by, inches from my nose.
Before I can say anything, I can hear laughing, followed by concern voices. It seems that one of the girls that ride my bus has thrown a can of soda at one of the guys who lives near the school.
Shaking my head, I lean against the wall, watching the scene.
"Hey, you okay?" Heather asks, the girl who had thrown the soda can.
    "Yea, it didn't hit me."
"No, I mean that scratch on your face; I noticed it at the bus stop."
"Oh, that, heh, its nothing, my cat was sleeping on my pillow and I turned over, and well, you can guess what happened after that," I tell her, feeling a bit awkward. "So what happened here?"
"He said something about my sister, so I threw a soda can at his head, shame he's okay though," she laughs.
"Huh-huh......" is all I really could say; besides the bell rang anyway. This really doesn’t mean anything since everyone waits for the second bell to head to their class.
By the way, I'm Jennifer, your normal fourteen year old living in a small town in a larger city and I am in the eighth grade. Nothing really special to report, I enjoy video games and the beach, normal stuff, you know.
I'm in my first period class, gym, yea, a great class to have early in the morning, before we head to the gym or the track, we meet in a normal classroom (also used for health class during the first part of the year) to take roll and to figure out what we're doing for forty minutes.
"Alright class," the tall and very skinny female coach says, holding a clip board and standing next to a young male, who is half her height. "I know it’s past the middle of the year, but we have a new student."
Murmurs are heard throughout the class room.
"Kyle Roberts comes to us from another school. Treat him with respect and make him feel welcomed to our school. Please sit anywhere, Kyle; we'll be leaving here shortly.
Following the new student with my eyes, I get this strange feeling that I've met him somewhere before. The teacher said that he came from another school, but maybe he lives in the area.
"Today we'll be in the gym, basketball and volleyball will be available for play. Head to the lockers and then head to the gym, I will be taking roll call there, so if anyone wants to skip, detention will be given out."
The class walks out towards the gym, the usual groups form up and I notice that the new kid is alone walking in the back. Being shy myself and unable to just talk to someone out of the blue, I continue to walk on.
"Just go talk to him," my friend Teresa says, once we make it into the locker room.
"Huh, what are you talking about?" I stammer.
"I saw you looking at him in class," she nudges me.
"I just thought I knew him, that’s all," I say, walking into the ladies' locker room.
"Well, you won't know until you talk to him, right?"
"Umm, I'm sure I don't know him, so it doesn't matter anyway."
"How old are you now? And still without a boyfriend?" Teresa teases.
    "So? Your point is?"
"I swear you can't be serious?"
"Whatever." I finish dressing in my gym shorts and shirt and head towards the gym.
Sure, she had a point, but so what. Not more than a year ago I had a taste of the relationship scene and that ended in drama, something that I could do without for a long time. Funny thing is, Teresa was part of that mess, or at least was the one feeding my information about my cheating ex-boyfriend. To this day I'm not sure if her intentions were good or not, and quiet honesty, I'm not even sure why I'm still friends with her. The thing is, one of my weaknesses is letting people off the hook after doing something bad, I tend to forgive way to easily and perhaps a bit too soon. To my defense, it’s always good to keep your enemies in range rather than away from your sight.
Waving her hand in front of my face, "Hey, are you just going to stand there all period?"
Rubbing my eye, I can see that Teresa is doing her usual, walking over to the guys to talk all hour. I normally play basketball with a friend of mine from sixth grade, but sadly Jeff was out sick. Looking around the gym, most people are just talking, sitting on the wooden floor, while a few are playing basketball. As long as we go to class and pass the final, gym at this school has to be the easiest class to pass.
The new kid is off by himself, a usual site when someone new comes to this school, shooting a basketball into the net. Rather than just standing around mindless for the remainder of the class, I decide to do something out of my comfort zone and walk over.
"Hey there," I say, great first impression, huh?
    "Hi."
    Small talk at its finest.
"So are you new to the area?" I ask.
"Yes and no. I tend to move around a lot," a pause. "Hey, didn't we go to the same elementary school together?"
    "Ummm..."
"It wouldn't have been for long, I was only down here for two years, kindergarten and first grade."
"Sorry, I don't--" I try to remember as my ears grow hot from being embarrassed. Did we really go to school together before?
Laughing, Kyle brushes a piece of brown hair that fell in front of his eyes, "Don't worry about it, it was years ago anyway. I sort of have a good memory."
"Ah, I see." I say, unable to think of what to say next.
    "Wanna play?"
"Huh?" I snap out of my daze.
"Basketball, unless, oh, you don't know how?" he teases.
I blink a few times, taken aback at what Kyle just said. "Excuse me?"
Laughing, he throws me the basketball and we play until the end of the period.

Its finally spring break and I get to baby-sit. Normally it would be a death sentence for anyone else, but I know the kid, so it wasn't a big deal for me. I was in charge of watching seven year old Miles Winder for the day. His mother worked as a nurse at the local medical facility and when school is in session, her son is at school, but during those breaks that all kids crave, Ms Winder tends to call on me, to watch her son.
"Alright, so what do you want to do today, Miles?" I ask him.
    "Watch TV!!" he exclaims.
"You sure," I grab the remote from the coffee table, "it’s a nice day outside, you know, and I think my bike needs a wash."
"No!" he cries out. "I'm on vacation!!"
"Calm down, I'm only kidding, let’s see what's on."

The sky begins to darken as the day draws on. Miles has been watching TV and eating snacks for most of the time, as I listen in on the TV programs while messing around on my portable gaming system. Its not that I'm not into the cartoons that he's watching, it’s just that I've seen them several times over. The phone rings, as a thunder roars several miles away, we both look at each before I finally answer on the fifth ring. He laughs and continues to watch the television.

    "Hello?"
"Jennifer, its Tenisha, I'm going to be a little late coming home, one of the temps called in and its been a little hectic here. I can pay you extra and there's food in the refrigerator."
"Don't worry about it, I really don't mind and my parents know that I'm safe here," I tell her.
"Oh thank you, I'll make this up to you later, I'll see you later."

I hang up the phone and head to the sofa, plopping down I pick up my game and say, "Mom's going to be late, so think of what you want to eat."
    "Pizza!!!" he says immediately.
"Do you know if you have any?"
    "Nope, we don't."
"Well, that doesn't help, right? We need to eat here, its going to rain soon."
"If we take the bus, we should be able to get to the mall before it rains. It’s still pretty far," he says, looking over at me with his bright blue eyes.
"And how do you know that?"
"The thunder, its still a good fourteen miles away."
"Huh-uh" That little show off. "But do you know the speed it’s moving and in which direction?"
He picks up the remote and switches to the weather channel, "And that’s why we have this great technology at our fingertips."
We listen in to the male reporter, "....for today it will be 30% of rain, with temperatures in the high eighties; we do have a system moving in from the west..."
"See!! Its still over the swamps, we'll be fine!"
"But how can it be 30% chance of rain when there's a storm right on the radar!" Shaking my head, "I just don't get it."
I feel Miles pulling on my arm as I stare at the TV, "Come on! We have to hurry!"

“Well, that took us over an hour to get over here, but,” taking a bite of my extra cheese pizza, “this is well worth it.”
Laughing between bites, “See, I told you it was a good idea!”
“Oh my god, did you hear!”
“This can’t be happening.”
Miles and I both look around the food court and we begin to see people walking quickly and talking very loudly.
I shrug, “Think it could be a tornado from the storm?” Shivering, “Because I really hate those things you know.”
“I don’t hear anything,” Miles answers back. “If it was a tornado, I think we would hear something, at least that’s what I read, something like a train-like noise.”
“They said monsters? Right? Monsters?
People begin to run, pushing others that get in their way, some head to the music store, since it displays TVs in the front.
“They say it’s the end of the world!”
“Hurricane maybe?” I say, a bit dryly.
“In April? And,” he shakes his head. “I can’t begin to say what’s wrong with that.”
Then we hear a frantic woman’s voice, “We’re all going to die!”

Chapter Two
Mass Panic

Wanting to laugh at the people running around like it really is the end of the world; I look over at Miles and say instead, “Want to check out the TVs to see what’s really going on?”
“Sure. I’m finished anyway.”
We both get up and empty our trays before making our way to the music store to see why everyone is in such a panic.
“Reports are coming in all around the world about these mysterious holes appearing at random. There have even been accounts where large animals, monsters if you will, have emerged from these portals. The military is on full alert and has advised everyone to remain calm and in their homes. The President will be speaking shortly and we will bring you his speech live as soon as it becomes available.”
My jaw hits the floor as we listen in on the news broadcast. “Miles,” I say, shaking my head, trying to focus, “stay close me. We need to make our way back home.”
I can hear people screaming now, running around the mall and glass breaking. I pull Miles closer to me as I hear people screaming about the world ending and to confess sins. I turn around to see people either running out of the mall or looting it. I can hear Miles speaking, but it’s not registering.
“Jen!” his voice finally breaks my daze. He’s pointing in the direction of where we had our lunch. From my perspective it looks like I need glasses. My vision seems to be blurry, but it’s only in that one spot.
“What is that?” I stammer out, trying to strain my eyes to focus. “Dose it look fuzzy to you over there?”
“Yea,” rubbing his eyes, Miles tries to focus on our common target. “I can’t make it out.”
Then a loud pop rings and echoes throughout the entire mall. People scream as their knees hit the floor in unison. I can barley hear as my ears ring, creating an instant headache. Another loud pop rings, it sounds like a gun shot mixed in with a giant bubble wrap bubble being popped and then sound broadcast through a megaphone. This occurs five more times, and now it seems my hearing is completely gone. I struggle to open my eyes, tears hindering my vision, I look around for Miles.
“Miles!” I cry, knowing that if I can’t hear, there’s a good chance that he cannot as well. I call out to him again, despite this, before seeing his body, lying curled on the floor. I roll him onto his back, his eyes closed, passed out from the noise, no doubt. My heart is beating out of my chest as I struggle to stand. The blood rushes to my head as I bend down to pick up Miles to carry him on my back. I gulp in a large amount of air, trying to keep myself from passing out. I slowly look over to the area where we were attempting to focus on and now it seems to be a circular pool standing vertical that is ten feet tall and five feet wide. The portal, I guess you can call it that, ripples but it looks like there’s something on the other side, and it’s not the food court. A bright gold light begins to shine around the outside of the portal as it begins to focus.
“Move!!!” I can hear a voice screaming into my head; it is extremely loud and feels like it’s not in my head at all. “You need to get out of there now!!!” It screams again, over the ringing.
I take a step back, the middle of the portal begins to clear up but before I can figure out what’s on the other side, a large beam of energy escapes the portal, files over our heads and destroys the entire music store.
Glass shatters behind us and it takes a shard in my lower legs to wake me up. I dart towards the right and, now with a slight limp and a seven year old on my back, I try my best to run and hide.
“This way!!!” this time the voice isn’t in my head. I look right and left but see nothing. Then I realize that I can hear again and that the popping hasn’t stopped but its faint now and it’s hard to focus on it. I then feel something grabbing onto my arm, causing me to stop running and spinning me to face forward: it’s Kyle. “Can you hear me?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Follow me; I can get you guys out of here.”
“What the hell is going on?” I cry out, following behind Kyle.
He stops and walks over, taking Miles from my back, “Later, we have no time to talk now.” Kyle makes his way towards one of the game stores in the mall. “We can get to the roof through here.
I can see Miles moving on Kyle back, “Let me down, I’m alright.”
Then we hear it, a loud boom, unlike before, this time, I can tell what it is: footsteps. Steps that can shake the ground that we’re walking on, “Do I even want to know what that is?”
“No,” Kyle leans down to safely let Miles down onto the floor. He opens the back door to the store as we follow.
“Are you sure you’re alright, Miles?” I ask, while looking back out towards the mall. “I can carry you if you want.”
“Don’t worry, I’m good.”
Grabbing a wooden ladder, Kyle places it directly under a gap in the ceiling. “We’ll have to climb to the very top of the ladder, so be careful. I’ll stay here to make sure no one follows you.”
Miles begins to climb the ladder first.
“Are you nuts?!”
“Just do it, I’ll be fine,” he answers.
“The mal is falling apart, and there’s crap that’s happening that’s not possible and you’re telling me not to worry?”
“Miles needs you, now get up on the roof before I have to force you,” he says, ignoring me.
Without saying a word, I begin to climb the ladder. It begins to shake as I near the top, a combination of me freaking out and the rumble from the footsteps. I pull myself up into the ceiling and look down, “Come on.”
Instead, Kyle knocks down the ladder and walks out of the back room of the store.
“Jen, lets head up, I’m sure he knows what he’s doing.”
-------
“Alright, you want to do this already!” Kyle yells out as he walks back into the mall. The footsteps stop, twenty feet from Kyle stands three robots. “It’s been a while since I had a nice workout like this, this should be good.”
The robots all share the same high tech medieval armor look, grey in color and mouths sealed shut. They have no eyes, instead, a horizontal line.
Kyle breaks into a run, heading towards the three robots. They begin to fire off beams of energy and in order to duck; Kyle takes flight, weaving in and out of three separate beams. He files past them, turns and shoots electricity from his finger tips. Pushing off the air with his foot, he heads for them again, this time, when he reaches range, he kicks one in the chin, a kick to the side of the face of the second one and then he places his feet on the ground and delivers several punches in the mid section of the third, before finally high kicking it in the face.
“Hmmm, you guys have gotten a bit tougher, a nice change. Too bad I can’t stick around,” A bright yellow light begins to form around his hands as he places them together. He hovers above the ground, flying backwards now, his eyes never leaving the three large robots. The light shines brighter and a ball of energy begins to grow larger and larger until it’s powerful enough to be thrown towards the robots, causing a massive explosion.
The ground shakes as we push open a grate to get onto the roof. After helping Miles, I rush towards the edge of the roof. It looks the same as it always did, save for the noise of honking cars trying to get away from the area. There are no monsters, robots, nothing out of the ordinary outside; just people panicking.
Miles walks to my side, “What’s wrong?” Then rethinking his words “besides this obvious, I mean.”
“Why did all that stuff happen in a mall? Of all the places to attack why,” but I’m cut off. The ground shakes again. We look at each other before turning fully around. Standing a few feet from our location, a giant robot. “Please tell me this is just one freakish dream.” It begins to walk towards us; each step is a loud boom. I step back, but touch nothing. I lose my balance and as a normal reaction, I reach out, but instead of grabbing a ledge, I grab onto Miles, pulling him down with me. I then hear glass shatter and as we top over the edge, I can see Kyle, flying towards us. (This has to be a dream, indeed.) He quickly reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small bottle. He throws it into the ground below us and before we hit the concrete, a loud pop rings through the area as Kyle catches us and everything goes black.

Chapter Three
Malfunctions

“Can someone please turn that alarm off,” Hadiyah yells out to her small circle of employees.
“Sorry Mam’am, it can’t be turned off until the entire system is reset,” Samir cautiously says, knowing that his superior already knows the precautions and alarms of the entire system here on the planet Zerron.
The planet Zerron is widely known as the home of The Universal Portal Company (also known as the UPC) and for their sand storms. Seventy-five percent of the planet is covered by sand and is uninhabitable but the twenty-five percent makes up for it with flying cars, high skyscrapers and the newest technology emerging all the time.
The UPC has been around for a good twenty years now, founded by Doctor Russell Anzak and his team. Originally from Vid before its downfall, Dr Anzak traveled to Zerron in hopes to finish his research in peace and solitude. He took with him knowledge from the New Vane's Magic Industries and mixed in elements from science and technology that helped him to finish his research on portals and voids and how they operate. Little is known on how he came up with his theory in the first place and he refuses to share said information. Regardless, Zerron and many other planets share in this technology of being able to transfer oneself from point A to point C in a matter of seconds. The UPC is a tight ship and they do not allow anyone to just walk in and use their services. A comprehensive background check and credits are required before one can even use the portals.
New Vane's Magic Industries are also located on Zerron and can be found at the capital, New Vane, which is several hundred miles from the UPC. Just like the UPC, its secrets are kept on heavy guard and to attend the magic school, an even heavier background check is required. There are many magic shops located around the school and the main factory but the prices are giving favor to the wealthy and royalty.
After Dr Anzak went public with his research, the NVMI banned him from their city, stating that teleportation should only be used either naturally or by magic and not science. They’ve even tried to get the UPC to move to another planet, but with some of their factories under ground, that would be almost impossible.
On this particular day, the UPC is facing massive malfunctions and reports of random portals opening on several planets, some of which are unaware of such technology and have been marketed untouchable or unworthy.
“Then find a way to turn them off, Samir, I can’t concentrate in this noise,”exclaimes Hadiyah. “If they want me to find out the why, I need some peace.”
“Heh, I bet Vane is having a field day with this mess up,” chuckles Makis.
All eyes are on Makis as they know that comment will only enrage Hadiyah.
“Oh come on, you know its true since they hate us –“ Makis is cut off.
“Makis!! Get back to work or go home, I am sick of your crap.”
“Sorry boss.”
Several minutes go by as all thirteen employees are typing away at their computer stations trying to find a solution to the problem. Besides the screeching alarm, not a sound can be heard, until, “Ma’am, I think I have something,” says Charis. “Or at least the locations that are having these random portals.”
Walking over to Charis’ station, Hadiyah leans over, “What do you have, Char?”
“It seems that the main area being affected is a planet known as Earth, which is supposed to be off limits due to their lack of technology and advancement. But that isn’t the strange part, for whatever reason, there’s matter coming through the portals that are opening on Earth. The matter isn’t registering as human, but robots, highly advanced ones like the ones made here for protection and security. It looks like the robots are programmed for one thing, to retrieve someone or something. It’s hard to read through all this programming, so I’m afraid that I can’t figure out what they’re after. But if this planet is so underdeveloped, what could it possibly have that someone wants so bad and how are they able to open up several portals like this without clearance, it doesn’t make sense.”
“Can you figure out where the portals are originating from?”
“No. The programming is highly advanced and there are so many blockers in place, whoever it is, they don’t want their identity known and it seems that they want to place the blame on the entire UPC.”
“So in other words, not our fault but now we need to find out who is up to this,” Hadiyah says, walking back to her terminal. “I’ll pass on your findings to the executives, good work Charis.”
“Hey, Charis, look at this,” whispers Samir.
Charis leans over into Samir’s station so only the two of them can hear each other.
Samir continues, “Look here, its faint, but it seems twenty minutes ago a man-made portal opened up.”
“That’s out dated technology, so its no surprise its faint” Chairs whispers, “Do you think someone was hiding on that planet? That would explain the robots.”
“It might, but I don’t think they caused this mess, not directly anyway.”
“Okay people,” Hadiyah calls out. “It seems these robots have retracted from the planet. We need to try to track their location to discover who started this mess. The executives are in talks right now to figure out what to do with the planets that have been affected.”
“Think we should tell her?” Charis whispers.
“No, at least not yet,” Samir answers back.
“So to answer your question,” Hadiyah continues, “Yes, it’s going to be a long night.”

Chapter Four
Around the Campfire

“I can’t tell if they’re sleeping or just unconscious.”
“Hey! What did I tell you before, back off!”
“Whoa, calm down, if you haven’t noticed we’re pretty much in this together.”
“And how am I supposed to know that for sure?” Kyle asks.
“You don’t, but at this moment, what other choice to you have?”
The portal dropped the three of us on a beach, knocking myself and Miles out cold. Kyle has been awake this entire time, watching over us. It seems that we’re not alone on this beach. Being extremely protective, Kyle has not left our sides since our arrival.
“Just leave him alone, Tom,” a short blond girl calls out from under a palm tree. “Give him some time; he’s just worried about his friends. Don’t you remember when we first got here?”
“Oh yea, you and your brother wouldn’t shut up on how unrealistic it is to have a wormhole open up in the middle of class.” Tom recalls, “That was a blast to go through.”
“We just like to see things from a realist and scientific point of view, that’s all,” a younger man, who looks a lot like the girl replies, while walking up from the ocean with a several fish tied on a string. “Dinner should be ready within the hour. May I advise you to attempt to wake up your friends? Food tends to go quickly here.”
Tom stands and walks over to the other young man to assist him with dinner, “He’s right, better get them up. Never know when we’ll get to eat again.”
I can hear Kyle sighing now, but my body refuses to wake up. I can see darkness and I can hear the ocean crashing into the shore, its calming in a strange way. But then I begin to feel a sharp, burning pain in my chest and it jolts me wake. Grabbing onto my chest, and breathing rapidly, I scan my surroundings. I can see a small campfire with three people around it. Past them is the ocean and a setting sun.
“Easy, you’re still felling the effects of the portal; it should begin to wear off soon.”
“Well, at least I can hear again, what was that thing anyway?”
“Which thing? The robots?”
“No, I know what robots are, I’m talking about-- wait, where’s Miles?”
“Ow, I’m here,” Miles answers, slowly standing. “How did we get to the beach?”
“Food, remember that?” Tom calls out from the newly created campfire.
“Who are they?” I ask standing and brushing off the sand from my blue jeans.
“Not sure yet, but they want us to eat, that’s usually a good sign.”
“Usually? Wait—we don’t even know---” Kyle cuts me off in mid sentence.
“I’ll tell you what I can once you guys eat, we might be stranded here for a while.”
“But who…?”
“Later,” Kyle heads towards the campfire and with no other options, we follow.
“Are you okay Miles?” I ask as we slowly make our way over.
“Yea, just a headache. What do you think is going on?”
“Wish I knew, but believe me, once we get over there, we better get some answers. I don’t like to be kept in the dark like this. Someone here has to know something. But at any rate, he’s right, you should eat something.”
“You should too, Jen.”
Then I smell it, our lovely dinner, “No.” Shaking my head, “I’ll be fine.”
We reach the camp, where we find three other people eating away.
“Better hurry, like I told your friend, food doesn’t last here,” Tom says with a mouthful of fish.
Miles joins the other three and begins to eat.
“Are you two going to eat anything?” The girl asks.
“No thanks, I ate---how long has it been?” I ask, looking at Kyle.
“About five hours.”
“Yea, I’m good, you guys go nuts.”
“Anything wrong, besides the obvious? You really should just try to eat something,” Kyle whispers to me.
“I hate seafood.”
“Is that the reason?”
“Yea, besides the obvious.”
“You should really try to eat.”
“I’m good, really.”
“I can’t promise you we’ll eat tomorrow, you know. I’m not sure what’s going to happen.”
“I’ll manage.”
“But you really---“
“So,” I say, taking a seat on the sand, trying to avoid Kyle, “who are you guys?”
“Pirates!” Tom answers.
“Wait, really?” I say sarcastically.
“Tom, knock it off,” the girl says. “Listen, we have a cave not too far from here. It’s protected us while we’ve been here, you guys are more than welcome to join us and there we’ll tell you what we know. It’s not safe to be out in the open at night.”
“Why not?” I ask.
The girl stands, “Let’s get moving and we can tell you a bit more. Trust me; we’ve all been in this situation before. Let’s get to the shelter so we’ll have one less thing to worry about.”
So we do just that. With Tom leading the way, the four of us trail behind.
“So you say that this cave is protected?” Kyle asks.
“Yep, it has some sort of shield,” Joe replies.
“We haven’t been able to figure out what type of technology is being used, but it’s protected us from the wild dogs at night.” The girl adds.
“So these dogs can’t get in but you guys can move about freely?” Kyle continues to ask.
“Trust me, when Tommy over there first got here, he would stand in front of that cave for weeks trying to figure out if it was safe or not. He had seen one of the wild dogs try to enter the cave and it got a nice jolt of celerity, killing it instantly.”
“So what made him finally enter this cave?” I ask.
“It was an accident,” Jocie says, picking up the pace. “Hey Tommy, care to tell the story…again?”
Tommy slows down while Jocie takes the lead.
“So it’s night out and I’m in the woods. The moon was bright enough for me to see where and what I was doing , so I wasn’t too worried. Of course that was until I started to hear howling not too far away from where I was. Just to be on the safe side, I started to pick up my pace. I wasn’t sure where I was going, but I knew I had to get somewhere safe real quick,” Tommy says. It seems that he’s really excited to share his story with us. “The howls and braking started to get louder so I started to run. Unfortunately clouds started to pass by the moon so it was getting harder and harder to see. Eventually the moon was completely covered by the clouds and I was running blind. I got smacked by several branches right before I tripped. I must have hit something because when I woke up, it was morning. That’s when I noticed that I was in the cave. I walked to the exit and two of the wild dogs were lying outside. I’m not sure how or what happened, but I guess while I was running, I ran straight into the cave and tripped while I was inside. And the dogs were unable to follow.”
I briefly look over to see Kyle’s reaction. I’m really not sure what to make of it. Part of me wants to think that he knows what type of technology is being used and another part of me just wants to dismiss that fact. How would he know anything and then it hits me: this mess started when he showed up? Could there be some sort of connection?
“So you thought it was safe to pass through the barrier after that?” Kyle asks another question.
“Heh, not really. Took me a while to finally walk outside of the cave.”
“Ha! I wish I could have seen you, throwing rocks at the shield and pacing back and forth before finally leaving the cave,” Jocie says from up a head.
By this time, we’re walking through a forest. Most of the trees look highly similar to Earth’s. Could we just be stranded on an island somewhere?
“So where are we?” I ask.
“No clue,” Joe answers.
“I know this is a silly thing to say, but, ummm, we’re on Earth, right?” I just had to ask, but after the words came out, I felt a bit awkward.
No one says a thing for a while, until we reach the cave, “Here we are,” Jocie says. “Make yourselves at home. No telling how long we’ll be here for.”
Several minutes go by and during this time a campfire is made in the middle of the cave. I can see make shift beds from leaves and other debris from outside but besides that, there’s really nothing in this cave.
The six of us are sitting around the campfire now. I can see the smoke from the fire heading towards the exit. My worries about inhaling smoke quickly fades away.
“So, what do you guys want to know?” Jocie says, breaking the long silence.
“Where are we?” Kyle asks. Seems that he had the same thoughts as I did.
“No clue,” Joe answers. “I want to say that we’re on Earth, but some of the creatures that we’ve run into so far I’ve never seen or heard of before. Of course, saying that we’re not on Earth pretty much destroys several theories and seems a bit ludicrous.”
“Have you guys looked around the area?” Kyle asks.
“We haven’t gone too far away from the cave. With only three of us, we didn’t want to risk an attack from the wild animals. So who knows, we could find a luxurious resort miles from where we are,” Jocie replies.
“Well, there’s six of us now, why don’t we try to look around?” I ask.
Joe and Jocie exchange glances before Joe says, “We could at least try. But we would have to plan it out and leave early. Honestly, I think we should wait at least a day. You’ve guys been through a lot.”
“How did you guys get here anyway?” Jocie asks.
“There was an attack, “ I say. “Robots, or at least something mechanical. Long story short, we were on the roof of a mall and we fell over. Next thing I know we’re here.” I tell them the short version of the story, leaving a few things out. A few things that need to be discussed later on.
“Attack?!” Tommy says, surprised. “Where?”
“Florida,” I answer.
“Strange. There wasn’t an attack on my end, in New York. I was walking down an alley, a short cut home, and I guess I walked through something because all of a sudden I was on a beach. To go from an alley to a beach in an instant, things that like just don’t happen.”
“We’re from Rhode Island. My sister and I were in class when it happened. Thirty students and we’re the ones that get sucked in, go figure.”
For the next hour the six of us talked. I learned that the twins are honor students at their middle school. They’re both great at science and math which instantly peaked Miles’ interest in them. They come from a normal home in the better part of the capital city.
Tommy is from Queens, New York and lives with his father. Not the best in school but he excels in sports. He works under the table at a meat market since he is still too young to work legally.
Miles, after learning about the twins’ interest, went into how he’s an honor student at his elementary school, especially in science and how he’s been dipping into mechanics as well.
I really didn’t go into much about myself, save for how I baby sit Miles while his mother is at work and that I play video games.
Same went for Kyle, who only mentioned that he transferred to my middle school and that he doesn’t know anyone in the area that he moved to.

I started to drift to sleep while listening to Miles and Joe talk about school stuff. Not something that I wanted to hear about while being stuck who knows where and sleeping in a cave with people that I hardly know.

Not sure of the time, I wake up. There is a line of moonlight coming from the exit of the cave, almost like a trail. I stand only to have my head begin to throb. Not sure if it’s from the lack of food or falling asleep against a rocky cave or just because of everything overall. I ignore it and make my way to the exit of the cave. I hesitate before walking outside, thinking about the shield and how it can kill something in an instant.

The air is much cooler than inside of the cave. The temperature isn’t what I am used to, being in the warmth of Florida my entire life, but it slightly feels good as the breeze passes by. Doubtful that I would enjoy the cool weather much longer, I turn around to head back into the cave. Before taking a step back into the cave, I stop to notice Kyle leaning against the side of the cave.
“Can’t sleep?” he asks.
“Nope. Hey, so I thought you were going to tell me something back then?” remembering our short conversation from before.
“Figured you needed time to get your head clear,” he says.
Of course my head is no where near ‘clear’, but I don’t care, I need to know at least something about this guy and/or what he knows. Something isn’t right, I just know it.
“Do you know why those robot things attacked the mall?”
“Yes and no,” Kyle says.
“What sort of answer is that?” is my frustrated reply.
Sighing, he finally says, “They were after you, but I don’t know one hundred percent as to why.”
He pauses.
I stand there, unable to move, think or say anything, my head spinning.
“Okay, maybe I have some sort of clue as to why, but I need to find out more before I say anything.”
Another pause.
“Okay, I know why, but I can’t tell you. I know it’s not fair, but you have to trust me on this.”
I stammer, unable to even process what has just been told to me. I’m frustrated at the fact the he is hiding something. He knows something about me that I don’t even know. It’s a bit scary when I think about it. Robots attack the mall where I hang out. They cause panic and for all I know, have killed some of the people that got in their way. All because they were after me? And for what? I’m just a regular fourteen year old girl from a small hick town in South Florida. I waste my time writing, play video games and babysitting. That’s it in a nutshell. So what are these robots after? Did I piss someone off in another life or something?
“Look, I’m sorry that this is all sudden, but you’ll know soon enough. I can’t risk anything happening to you.”
“So. You’re saying. That….they might follow us? Here?” I slowly say.
“Yes. If you find out too much, especially too quickly, they’ll be able to track you.”
“And you flew? Before?”
“Yes.”
“And you brought Miles and I here?”
“Yes.”
“What about the other three?”
“No. I don’t know what they are doing here. It’s very strange that they’ve managed to come here. Especially now. And the last time I was here, the entire planet was abandoned.”
“So you know where we are?”
“Yes.”
“But….”
“I can’t tell you.”
“So what can you tell me, I guess is the only question that I can ask right now.”
“Not much,” Kyle says, looking away. “I’m so sorry, but all I can say is that you’re safe for right now. But it’s not going to last. My instructions are to keep you safe under any and all circumstances. That’s why I was ‘transferred’ to your school and why I was at the mall the day of the attack.”
“Did you know about it? The attack, I mean?” I say. I notice that my hands are shaking, I quickly place them behind me, hoping that Kyle did not notice.
“I had a feeling something was going to happen. I just didn’t think it would be that soon, and that public. These people like to work under the radar, especially on a planet like Earth.”
“So this is some serious stuff, right?” I say, walking over with stiff legs to lean on the cave next to Kyle. I didn’t feel comfortable standing out in the open like that.
“Yea. Wish I could ---” I cut Kyle off.
“Drop it. Like you said, you can’t tell me anything right now. So we just wait.”
We both just stand there, leaning on the cave for what seems like hours, without saying another word.

So I started to work on chapter 5 today. Somehow, somewhere, I ended up starting chapter 6 as well.

Yea, ummm...ooops.

Hopefully I'll be done with chapter 5 first, probably by next week. Would be sooner, but since I work on Sunday, I can't work on it as much as I want to.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
