Use this link to donate if interested -- 3 people donating $5/month is more than enough to keep us going (at least for now).

Not through DreamHost obviously (the rates are completely fucking insane), but more through something like, say, Linode BuildYourVPS.

I've been talking to various people, and the cheaper plans would be more than adequate enough for Wiki growth, not to mention the possibilities of expansion into other things, should we want. Basically, sort of a "Home for more resource-intensive shite" that doesn't really fit on DreamHost. (Yes, we got too big. I'm tickled.)

The big issue is, of course, paying for it. Would anybody be up for chipping in to get this? I'd need at least $10-20/month to keep it running (and more if we get even bigger), and worst case I could always cancel it, move everything back to shared hosting, and go back to 500 Internal Server Error land.

If you want to donate, just click this and put in numbers and hit the button.

"But wait!", you shout. "There's already a donate button in the FAQ!"

Yes, but that goes to the DreamHost-only Rusted Logic fund bucket. Of particular note is that you can actually donate to this one, and I can use it to cover expenses from either end.

Whenever I get the funds I'll go ahead and set it up and start getting stuff moved over... and that will (hopefully) be the end of 500 errors.

Thank god.

Hm. For comparison, the VPS I have:

1.5 GB commit RAM, 1.5GB additional burst
1 GB Hard drive
1 TB bandwidth at 10mbps full-duplex
1 Dedicated IP address

$17/mo

Add $1 for 5GB of disk space, or $2 for 10 GB instead of 1.
Add $2 for 2 TB transfer, or $6 for 3
You could probably go cheaper on the RAM, which is where most of the cost of my VPS goes:
$7 less nets you 512MB comitted, additional 512MB burst RAM.

The other thing is that if you go with my VPS provider, I get 10% of anything you pay (credit for referring you) and funnel that back to you, essentially giving you 10% off for a year.

Yeah, that one looks pretty good -- I like the customization of it.

1TB/mo, 1GB Burst/512MB Guaranteed RAM, 5GB disk, Debian 5 32bit, 1 IP: $11/month

The problem is that I can't find any information on, say, overages or anything else. Hell, the entire site is really barren and doesn't give a lot of information.

Yeah, that's the -one- issue with BYV.

Basically, CPU overage is defined loosely as "running at 100% for a long time," using burst RAM as comitted (ToS covers this), or using too much bandwidth, the latter two result in a notice that you need to upgrade your service, and if you don't you get an overage charge (exact formula's in the tos).

As far as upgrades go, they're not too hard. I had to upgrade mine (I picked the wrong IP option... derp), and all that happened was I paid for the new VPS, and that night I got a full refund for the old VPS plan, but I kept the old VPS and discarded the new one, if that makes sense. Eh, it worked pretty well for me, and the support guy on their IRC was pretty helpful, though I had to highlight him to get his attention.

Yeah, once you find the actual TOS it's alright.

Makes sense, and it's a good way to have overages without screwing your customers. You get a notice, and if you act on it within 24/48 hours (depending on what is over) you're not charged anything extra, aside from the upgrade.

The only problem right now is that I can't see anyone on their IRC channel, so what I was *going* to ask of them (specifically, how you'd add me as a referrer) I can't ask :/

That's in the TOS too, so don't worry about it (though I'd need your account name).

I mean more where the referrer dialog is. I don't think it's the "discount code" dialog at the order form

EDIT: "... or mentioning it to an employee of TOCICI." That works.

Donations (if any) should be paypal'd and not through dreamhost.

So I take it we're moving entirely off of DreamHost?

We're big boys now!

I'd definitely be more than willing to help subsidize this.

I think we should also run PW ads on the wiki as well. They seem to work well here, and they are not too intrusive.

Yay

I donated a few dollars ($4) to this. TCRF won't get as successful if people keep getting 500s.
