"Daten der Weltraumpiraten decodiert" = "Space Pirate data decoded"

"Basis auf Bryyo" = "Base on Bryyo"

"Schlachtschiff der Marodierer-Klasse" = "Marauder(?)-class battle ship"

"Jäger der Stiletto-Klasse" = "Stiletto-class fighter"

"Rückkehr der Jägerin" = "Return of the Hunter" (that is, Samus)

"[...]bestätigt schlimmste Annahme - Samus lebt[...]" = "[...]confirms worst assumptions - Samus is alive[...]" (?)

...I guess. Most text is really hard to make out... If you can get some of the German scan data decrypted/decompressed, I could try translating it.

I would, but I have no idea how I would decompress this. I've been playing around with the MDecomp source, but I don't think I have the ability to decompress much of anything.

Found some Metroid Prime 2 leftovers in NoARAM.pak; I'll post them after I've gone to bed and gotten up.

Sent some, now to demonstrate something weird:

"Dark Agon Temple"

"Dark Torvus Temple"

"Ing Hive Temple"

"Sky Temple Keys Found"

I'd say they were leftovers from the engine test in Prime 2's maps, but here's the thing: That took place in the Light World. These only refer to Dark World elements.

I have no idea why they're here. Any ideas?

http://wiki.rustedlogic.net/Metroid_Prime_3:_Corruption

Started on the page. If you want a copy of the new enemy scans, PM me; you won't get much out of them right now, though.

There's also a shitload more German scans, all unused. I'll post everything again when it can be decompressed, but for now PM me if you want something.

This is clearly a compression format, likely an LZ77/LZW format similar to YAZ0, MIO0 etc that Nintendo has been using since Super Mario 64. Note the header (4 characters followed by three 32-bit values), end padded with FF, "less legible as you go on" (typical of LZ).

Curious though how the header looks like the first word is always 1, and the second begins with 0xA0. In earlier formats, those three words would be decompressed data size, compression map offset and uncompressed data offset. Since this is a disc-based game, likely the decompressed size is no longer needed (decompress until you hit EOF) and that word has been replaced with some type of flag. The 0xA0 could be another flag or perhaps signify that this is a segment address with some number of leading bits (I'd guess 4) specifying the segment number.

*necropost*

Hey, I've been able to decomp these with MDecompress (thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Tauwasser) and have been posting them on the page.

I need someone who speaks German well to translate these:

Linky

EDIT: Updated package of German data.

I've given them a shot, but it's a lot. Nevertheless, I started here. Feel free to look through to see if there's any useful unused content in there.

I did the first four files, here. I will update the file as I go.
Those are very literal translations, not double checked for spelling and literally translated as I went through the files once from top to bottom. I don't how important or clear this is, but so far, the "master" referred to is always female. The text had one typo and reads pretty weird, which is why I kept the "The" in front of most things like Phaaze and stuff, because it reads the same in German. Almost as if this isn't written from a POV that actually knows these in-game words, so I guess this didn't even make it to the editor.

The "master" is Dark Samus, so that makes sense.

Pretty sure "gamete" should be translated as "seed" and "kernel" as "core"; that's consistent with the final terminology.

Nice to know how early these are. I do wish we had the original English versions, though. Ah well. I think that the German translations might be what was unpolished when they were scrapped, though- see below, since I have proof at least one of these scans existed in a more final form in its original English.

This actually suggests (along with some concept art for another stage of corruption in the Trilogy artbook) that another planet might have existed in extremely early development! There's a pirate log set after the Homeworld falls and the Leviathan has been seized, and a Federation log set after they know what Phaaze is. The game being designed with another planet in mind would account for the poor pacing near the end; there's hardly any buildup to Phaaze, you just walk into a room, hit some switches, and it opens up.

Also: Pretty sure that Aurora scan was quoted verbatim in its original English form in one of the Metroid Prime 3 Channel videos:

"Aurora Unit - GF DF AU068"
"20 years ago, a team of Federation scientists announced the birth of an organic supercomputer. Its name was...Aurora. Since that historic date, thousands of Auroras have been built and installed. Originally designed for scientific purposes, the Auroras are now used in government, business, and military roles as well. They are given male, female, or gender neutral personas, based on the needs and desires of the staff in the facility they are to serve in. A vast network links all existing Auroras, allowing them access to a tremendous database without peer."

This is interesting because it lets us see at least one of these early scans in original form, whereas all we have left of the others is unfinished German translations.

(I'd love to interview someone at Retro about how, exactly, this situation occured; Retro is an American company and the scandata was written inhouse, so I wonder why the German is intact in all these?)

Certainly, "Schlachtschiff" should be translated as "battleship". "Destroyer" would be equivalent to "Zerstörer", which is a smaller ship.

The traditional naval categories are as follows:

"Submarine" - "U-Boot"
"Destroyer" - "Zerstörer"
"Cruiser" - "Kreuzer"
"Battleship" - "Schlachtschiff"
"Aircraft carrier" - "Flugzeugträger"

I found it fitting and didn't play the game. You have some translations wrong as well on the wiki page. I don't know if I should just let you continue and then fix later or if we should split the work before anything more gets done twice.

Urtraghus is the (incredibly creatively named) "Pirate Homeworld". Notice that they specifically mention the Federation assault, Mistress Grandray (=Gandrayda) going missing, and you stealing a Leviathan, all of which occurs on that planet. Also, the Pirate Homeworld Shriekbats are specifically "Urtragian Shriekbat".

Weird that there's Federation logs about Phaaze, though. I have to wonder where they were planning to have that, unless you were intended to meet back up with the fleet at some point or something.

EDIT: The pirate log could've been hidden in some corner of PH, in an area that only opens after you steal the Leviathan, or something.

I know what Urtraghus is; I'm noting that those are Pirate logs set after they're supposed to have been pushed underground there.

I suppose that's possible, but even the area leading up to the Leviathan battleship is free of pirates, isn't it? There are a few deep into the planet, but for the most part there isn't a sizable enough presence on conquered Urtraghus. Again, combine this with the concept art for another phase of Corruption, poor endgame pacing, and Phaaze logs...

Perhaps not another full planet, but some kind of area seems to have been cut between seizing the Leviathan and Phaaze.

...All right, looking through Metroid6.pak, I no longer believe any substantial area was cut. I believe Phaaze was once intended to be a normal planet. A handful of scans are in that directory which don't mesh with Phaaze-as-the-final-straightforward-stretch, but which would make sense if Phaaze was a full planet. All of these are used elsewhere, but have no reason to be loaded on Phaaze.

This isn't simply speculation based on odd scan inclusion, either. The very first teaser trailer of Prime 3 depicts a very different early Phaaze. These scans merely serve to suggest that the Phaaze shown in this prerendered video was implemented to some extent.

Hunter-Class Gunship
Entering the ship will allow you to
recharge, reload, and save.

Hunter-Class Gunship
Based on the previous version, the new Hunter-class gunship is a fusion of Federation and Chozo technology. Designed by Samus Aran, this one-of-a-kind vessel was custom built at the Federation shipyard of Aliehs III. It is equipped with a powerful Chozo biotech computer that can interface with Aran via a Command Visor unit. The ship contains a mobile energy-recharge system, microfactories designed to produce ammunition, and an advanced medical bay.

Blast Shield lock engaged.
It is invulnerable to even the
heaviest of weapon fire.

Blast Shield
Blast Shields are invulnerable to all types of weapon fire. Some are engaged when hostiles are detected and will only open once the threat has been eliminated. Others will sometimes remain shut and force you to find an alternate route.

Galactic Federation Door
Weapon fire can disrupt the
energy shield and open the door.

Galactic Federation Blue Door
All Federation doors are designed with a low-level energy shield to prevent accidental activation. Shooting the energy shield will activate and open the door. Blue-colored energy shields may be disrupted by weapon fire of any type.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
