So yeah. As I said, I've been trying to work on my art stuff by drawing just about every day. I'll post up the fruit of my labors every so-often, but probably not every day because it's a pain to scan just one pic a day.

My first focus is drawing Sonic the Hedgehog-style characters, as it seems like it's a good starting point, and then once I feel confident with that, I'll move onto other things.

If you know of any good Sonic-style drawing tutorials or have any suggestions, by all means, I'd love to see them.

When drawing Sonic style characters, you need to make the body a bit smaller, and practice a bit more to be consistent. You'll get better if you keep practicing. And Tails is a jerk to draw (His head isn't a circle like everyone else's) :V

I know all about Sonic style though, I had a Sonic fancharacter when I was younger, so if you need any pointers I can help :3

Any advice I can get would be excellent, thanks for the pointers. My friend told me about the bodies, so I'm gonna try and work on that more. And hands...the hands, gah! I'll get 'em eventually though.

So what exactly is it you're saying about Tails' head not being a circle? What exactly is it then?

A weird cross between a rounded triangle and an egg. It's a very weird shape, and he's pretty much the only one with it. Even knuckles uses a circle, although a bit weirdly.

Okey doke, thanks. I'll have to look at things a little more on Tails and work on it.

Also, been starting to try to work with Knuckles just a little. I haven't done much with him, just one trial head shot as of now, but he's rather tough right now.

Again, if anyone knows of any tutorials, I'd love to see them. Thanks. =)

Here is my advice:

1. PRACTICE.

Art is a cruel mistress, if you neglect her she will not work for you. Keep drawing, and drawing and drawing.

Everyone has a thousand bad drawings in them, you need to work and get them out.

2. TRACE

Anyone who tells you that tracing things is not the way to learn is a liar. Tracing teaches an eye for detail, and helps make sure you are not "improvising" details. If you trace a lot, you will start to understand scale and style tricks quicker.

3. COPY

Copying, where you look at something, and try to draw it without tracing. This is one of the key things in learning how to draw. You copy official artwork over, and over again by breaking down and trying to get everything right. When you are done, do it again. When you finish your new one, do it again. Redraw the same character at least 20 times.

4. Break things down.

Circles, Cylinders, and Cubes. Draw these lightly to sketch out the basic shape. Keep the fine details till last.

5. Draw what you love but don't love your art.

You should never become married to a drawing you have done. With more practice you can do better, don't just keep adding detail to that one work, move on, or start drawing it again.

Drawing what you love in important, ignore the people who say that fan-art sucks. As long as you are practicing and not obsessing over your artwork, then fan-art is fine. Just start thinking about how to draw your own original characters in that style.

These are just my tips on how to become better, it is what worked for me anyway. Keep up the practice Rick.

I'm following the advice to a "T", thanks! Been doing that even before it was said.

Though if people have any good tutorials for drawing Sonic characters, that's what I'm looking for as well, so I can view all kinds of different styles of drawing them.

Your body proportions are a tad off. Smaller than the head it should usually be,

also note, the head is connected to the body, it doesn't rest on top. No necks and yeah...

Are you going for a more classic look, or something similar to the newer art?

Also, some of those tips. Tracing and copying are incredible, tracing and saying it's art is bad yeah, but tracing for practice is so helpful.

The copying too, I used to copy pokemon from my pokedex book back a long time ago, and I got a ton better at drawing.

For specific tutorials... I don't think there's any out there, but I could doodle up some diagrams and stuff if you want. It's been a while since I've drawn the style though, so you'll have to bear with me if I do :x

Mmm, I'm going more toward the newer style of art I guess. I've been using the comics as reference on occasion too, so yeah. I tried to fix the head problem last night, and I'll start working on it a little further now when I start doodling.

Here goes more practicing later!

Also, I'll have to get some tracing paper at some point. I'd like to steal some things from the comics/official art and then just use the tracing paper to break it down into shapes and use that for reference.
