Edit: I poked around some more BTIs. (Thanks to Treeki for the help!) Here are my finds.

1. StarWandBlurCursor has files that look like they'd be used for the Sling Pod's pulling aim indicator thing, but I can't be sure.

2. Remember how we dismissed DevilTail as just a copy of the pole tips from Melty Molten Galaxy? Turns out it has a texture associated with it that is certainly not part of a pole.


3. The boring ball planet Normal Galaxy has some normal maps with it. I guess it was used to test normal maps.

4. I now realize that Normal Block is an unused beta model, and it comes with a nice normal map.

5. The unused small shell column from Bonefin Galaxy has a normal map too. The UV map seems like it could still use it.

So, to anyone who identified DevilTail as a copy of the PoleTop/Bottom... where is that used in the game?


I went through videos of all of Melty Molten, where I thought it was said to be, but I didn't see it.

Okay, so I think I noticed another unused Zone in SMG1, but I'm not entirely sure. HeavensDoorGalaxy (Gateway Galaxy) uses zones named HeavensDoorSmallZone and HeavensDoorMiddleZone, but there also exists a HeavensDoorLargeZone that isn't referenced. I'm going to keep investigating, but think you could try it out, skawo? The planet it uses is Moon Planet, which is normally used in Deep Dark Galaxy (Kamella's entrance).

It seems this game has more unused zones than I thought. Some seemingly regular zones are turning out to be unused, as seen with the previous one I found. The one I just found is CubeBubbleExDZone. It's not used by either of the two CubeBubbleEx galaxies. I'm not entirely sure about it, as I may have overlooked something, but the mapparts seem to further suggest its unused status: 52 instances of NormalIkakkuCubeBubbleParts and NormalIkakkuTestParts on the common layer. As for objects in the map itself, it has a start platform, a mini sun planet, some space mines, and lots of LavaSteam. It also has a bunch of invisible walls. Oh, and a Power Star.

Edit: Another hit, with an even less predictable name. KoopaBattleVs3AZone is the only KoopaBattleVs___ zone not referenced, and it is full of NormalKannoTest objects in mapparts, 205 in total. As for placed objects, it has 80 of them, most of which are blocks and some Fire Bars, but some Dry Bones, a Bullet Bill, and a Red Urchin are also in there. The only other things I can tell about the zone is that it uses bloom and is sandwiched between two large blocks of death.

Edit: Another one? SandIslandSamboZone is one of the unreferenced zones for Dusty Dunes Galaxy. Its mapparts include 3 NormalHayashidaParts, 6 NormalGroundA, and 1 NormalCommonBlocks. It has 19 objects, all coconuts, Pokey Pods, and a Pokey.

Edit: I'm not entirely sure what I've found. SeaVolcanoZone appears to be some kind of recreation of Drip Drop Galaxy (Tear Drop Galaxy, which uses no extra zones). Where the sunken ships in Drip Drop are part of the planet model itself, this one manually takes the DropOfWater Planet, resizes it, and places it somewhere, along with two cannons. Oh yeah, and it has its own sky and Power Star, making it rather unique. Did I mention one of the items it mentions is KinokoSuper?

On a less zone-discovery note, it seems the name for Gringill's object is SkeletalFishBaby. It seems they were originally tied with Kingfin. Also note that the object name is different from the wall-based Gringills, meaning they were possibly two separate enemies at one point.


This one I'm not sure about. PhantomIceMazeZone uses the ice maze planet from Space Junk Galaxy, but with 5 or so Boos and a Power Star. Maybe my memory is fuzzy but I don't remember that. It's not referenced by StarDustGalaxy at all.

Don't know what to make PoyoPoyoPlanetZone. It only contains two TrampleStars and a NormalCommonMapParts. Huh?

One last discovery! TwinFallLakeZone seems to be an earlier version of ColdTwinFallZone found in Beach Bowl Galaxy. It uses the same planet. The difference in this one is that it uses the Spring Mushroom. Hmmmm.

And that's all of them. All zones are accounted for. Skawo, if you could, would you mind testing out these zones?

Okay, I checked them all out.

CubeBubbleExDZone
Is a zone with lots of wind-objects. It has a stationary green platform and a wind spewing thingy.

KoopaBattleVs3AZone
I couldn't quite see this one very well, because it spawned next to a gigantic blackhole but it doesn't load any model, so it's just a bunch of objects (I saw a star and firebars) in midair.

SandIslandSamboZone
This is a really weird zone. Loads no actual planet object. The enemy formation looks really similar to the one in Dusty Dunes with a pokey in middle and small green pokeys on the sides. The weird thing is, it has a load of hopping coins which fly away when you come close to them and start rotating around the gravitational pole of the "planet"

SeaVolcanoZone
This is a very interesting planet. It has two Toad Brigade ships, one floating on the water and one sunken. There's a couple of eels in the water, and also a few rolling red urchins. Also a Star, on a ship, but it's misaligned a bit. There's an interesting chest though, which seems to hurt me when I touch if it's not open (could be something else hitting me though, I'll have to investigate that more later). It's a blend of gray and green and has a flashing part. Can be opened with a normal koopa shell and contains a 1Up Mushroom. The background it (the zone) spawns is really weird.

PhantomIceMazeZone
It's exactly what you said. It has one boo on the outside and some inside. There's also a sign without a proper message ID. There are also very curious lights in it which I don't recall seeing in the retail game.

PoyoPoyoPlanetZone
It consists etirely of two bouncy balls from Ghostly Galaxy next to eachother so you can bounce from one to another.

TwinFallLakeZone
This is the most interesting one. It has urchins which behave more like the Super Mario World ones (floats in the air and moves instead of rolling across the ocean floor). Their movement range is very very very limited though, so it seems like they're glitching out. There are also a couple of cheep cheeps. Now, there's the deal. It loads the new planet model, but it still has the gravity and waterboxes of the old planet This causes the Spring Mushroom not to spawn. There are no Cataquacks either. It seems like the planet was half-submerged, because the waterbox is really giant and reaches the midair platforms.

For the Koopa one... if the black hole is definitely part of the zone, I suppose a brief shot of whatever you can see in it is better than nothing. Or perhaps use a powerup cheat to avoid the hole?


And for the Twin Falls, are the water blocks invisible, or are they easily discernable? It would be neat to get an overal view of them to see what the old layout might have looked like.

Yeah, I missed that little line at the bottom of the list of awesome.


Given the similarity of Drip Drop and Bonefin, and considering the Gringills swimming around (a one-time enemy) are called Skeletal Fish Babies in the object name, they could have very well been part of the same galaxy at one point. It's also worth mentioning that the water sphere planets, seen in Good Egg Galaxy, are essentially identical to Drip Drop Galaxy's planet, but without the junk scattered around. These planets may have been decorative to begin with, but given that the same principal is used very sparingly in the rest of both games, it could also be possible that these, too, were part of the same larger galaxy.

The video mentions unused coconut behavior, I think that's just how they behave when the gravity reverses (they seem to bounce because the direction of fall keeps flipping back and forth).

I love the bobbing coconuts. Their position and the position of the Pokey Pods in the ground lead me to believe it was a disk planet.

I just noticed that HeavensDoorLargeZone was missing from the video. Think you could record a short clip of that? I'm afraid there might not be much to see, but it's still worth seeing. If you want more content to fill the video with, you could try doing TwinFallsLakeZone again but move the water blocks out of the way to see how that affects things.

I assume it would be a matter of changing their coordinates with Anarchy or removing them from the zone altogether... though that's assuming Anarchy works properly now. Without it, you'd have to just look inside the zone file and locate the coordinates for the blocks manually... which would be quite tedious. If Anarchy doesn't work properly yet, you can ignore that request for now.



Considering that the unused zones use unused objects, I have a feeling that is the last place to tap for unused stuff. The game handily provides a list of all valid objects, so it's just a matter of going down the list and plugging them in to see if they work. There are also the object arguments that we can tinker with. The BigBubbleGenerator used to create the cube bubble is the same object that creates the normal bubbles. These are the two different sets of arguments used in both cases:

Spherical (Normal) Bubble
0: FFFFFF
1: 96
2: 96
3: 0
4-7: FFFFFF

Cube Bubble
0: B4
1: 320
2: 320
3: 3
4: 0
5-7: FFFFFF


It might be impossible to figure out what each of these do without tons of testing.
