So, now that I have some time off, I've decided to start working on trying to better my art skills. I've been wanting to do this for years now, but school always got in the way of me doing stuff. Now that I've graduated, this isn't happening.

Since I'm trying to teach myself something, what have you managed to teach yourself how to do in your spare time? No classroom instruction, just good ol' fashioned hard work and/or tinkering with stuff for a long time.

Not really. Save for writing. I think I've gotten better over time by writing and posting on my own.

I'm trying to learn guitar, but that's going no where fast.

Programming

I found a book on how to program the Commodore 64 when I was 8 years old. I'm not good with modern programming, however.

Learning how to navigate software well, and QBasic.

Nothing else really much.

Mainly, all of my computer knowledge, gaming skills, and cooking, but frankly, I try to learn something new everyday. It's just that a lot of that stuff I've also had some schooling or outside help in so it probably doesn't count.

I taught myself how to use Blender and TT64, which I'm proud of I also taught myself how to use other game/level building software like Super Mario Bros. X and Unreal Editor. While I don't know any programming language, I can take bits of HTML and USUALLY get it to work

lots of little things, mostly related to the theory and practice of music--I did have formal piano training for a good 8 or so years which helped (I've been playing 11+) but past that I'm entirely self-taught on the guitar, bass, and even singing (although I have begun to take lessons on the later merely to improve my technique, something I wasn't able to properly develop on my own)

oh yeah, and as far as rom hacking goes these days I mostly just figure things out myself using documentation and a bit of experimenting.

I learned how to tie my shoes when I was four by watching everyone around me. The first time I did it without completely mangling my shoelace took me the better half of 10 minutes. And today I don't even tie my shoes. I tie them once when I buy them, then slip them on and off when needed.

I also taught myself how to cook, since nobody else in the family knew how when my mom was hospitalized for about a week.

Others include programming (really badly), drawing (also very badly), as well as motherhood skills I've developed over the last 6 or 7 months.

Wow, someone else does this? I thought I was alone.

(Though occasionally I have to re-tie them; the knot slips.)

A lot of programming stuff. I got a kick-start with a C class when I was younger and have been programming since. While I do visit a programming class at school currently, I'm mostly ahead a lot, so it's more like free good marks.

ROM Hacking also. Started by downloading TLP and a few game-specific tools and doing crap. I still need to learn ASM though, badly.

I taught myself how to fart how to play guitar. By play guitar, I mean just strum the strings like there's no tomarrow. The result: a little song I like to call Funky Chicken.

This makes five. You know, inc. me, that is.
Sometimes I re-tie them, but that's because the ties don't seem to stay exactly right and/or I suck at getting the ties permanently on.

I dropped out of college quite early because of lack of interest. At the time I was still attending college, the only IT related education here in Holland was a very general system administration related one. Nothing related to programming / software- and/or web development which was what I was really interested in.

I've been a professional web developer for years now, last 3 years even as a project leader. I started out with simple PHP and sloppy HTML way back, around 2000 or so. Up to date I have experience with pretty much all techniques necessary to make a decent website / application, and I can work in many programming languages. The only thing I have actual certification for, is ASP.NET 3.5.

For the rest, I'm great at cooking. I started with simple spaghetti when I was 12 years old. Nowadays I can cook pretty much everything.

I can't remember when I last wore shoes that tie, actually

I wear flip-flops and sandals a lot when it's warmer.

Self-taught skills? Drawing, most definitely. Playing Piano and Guitar are partially self-taught (had a piano teacher for about 7-8 years, and a guitar teacher for about 3.) Tin Whistle though is completely self-taught.

I've also taught myself (X)HTML and CSS, as well as Photoshop and Illustrator. And maybe some audio and video editing as well.

I wear flip flops all the time, unless I'm walking/jogging or going to work.

Yep, I do this, too. I guess it's not too uncommon. I've always been really sluggish with tying shoe knots and stuff. Fingers are just a bit sluggish when I'm trying to coordinate something that's not muscle memory, though I suppose that's usual.

Anyway, as for things I've taught myself, I guess most of what I learn from computers I've discovered through experimentation or research, but I've asked people for information on things. Same with programming, though I'm not particularly good at it.
