OK, apparently Google is only giving me 10 results again. I don't like page flipping constantly and I want my 100 results back

Also, they now have this "Instant" feature, where it tries to load search results as soon as you type a character. Does anyone else totally despise that feature? I don't like it in Firefox's URL bar, where when I want to type a word like "GameFAQs" to get the recall of recent Web sites, I suddenly have to wait several seconds for the computer to look for Web sites containing "G", then wait for "Ga", and so on. I always thought that this was unnecessary and wasteful and just slowed everything down, and now Google does it by default too? I didn't notice this before because I tend to use the Google search bar, but ugh. Seriously.

Are there any simple, 1990s-style search engines around these days? I already am not much a fan of Google for some searches because of how it tends to rank the pages by popularity, so searching for just about any game tends to give me the huge pan-gaming networks rather than the little Web sites about each series, and now this. I should start using dmoz's Open Directory again, although their limited number of Web sites can be less than ideal too.

Not really, Yahoo is about as close as ti gets but they're a bizarre Bing-powered shell of what they once were. Altavista in turn is just piggybacking on Yahoo's search engine.

I always hated google, though. I can't trust people who claim "Do no evil" as their motto.

To disable Google Instant, go into account options, preferances, Google Instant. Select off. Boom. Problem solved.

At first I didn't like Google Instant, but I'm going to give it a chance. Who know's, maybe it's supierior to that of normal Google, as long as you have unlimited bandwidth and data and a computer that doesn't like to crash.

I usually use Firefox's bar, so I didn't notice at first, then I noticed the results change when I change the search string, which I do often. However, it's kind of stupid, because when I finish retyping the query, I get "press enter to view results"
I'll turn it off if I find that it annoys me enough.

Or just click the drop down that's next to the search button.

My computers all work fine with it. The constant updating is annoying as you're still typing out your search query. They should give it a 2-3 second buffer of the last letter typed. The problem with Google is that they implement this kind of thing with an option to turn it off at first, then without any consultation they make it permanent and remove the old way completely.

I'm actually getting used to it. The only thing I still don't like is how Google creates a page overlay when you click on an image and land on the website it belongs to. Closing that overlay is somehow delayed, too. :/

Are you using a plugin/extension like NoScript? That could be the reason...

Edit: And yea, I disabled that Google Instant thing too... wonder how long it'll be before I'm forced to disable JavaScript on Google.com =/

NoScript is your friend in this case.

:p

I think they fixed the number of results bug, now 100 sticks.

I wonder why they won't allow you to save that setting to your Google account instead of to a browser cookie, though.

I thought when Google introduced annoying new "features" they only allowed the setting to be saved to your account? So you need to register to turn it off? They've done that a couple times now.

All I'm seeing so far is that if I use the search bar on the page itself, it fucks up all the stylesheets and lags, but if I use the one in Firefox, it doesn't.

It's an enigma
----------------------------------------------------
I kinda love google instant.

It's very rare that I actually google something with the correct keywords on the first go. Being able to type and see things pop up as I do so helps me get to where I need to go faster.

Google instant does not bother me in the slightest. It has speeded up my searching by quite a bit. It is also a great help in getting the right keywords to show what I want to find.

I do agree however that there should of been an option to turn it off.
