I found some strange stuff in SNES HyperZone:


An unused Halken logo stored with the ending graphics. The big "HAL" on the left is used, but the "HALKEN" on the right with the logo above it is not. I wonder if it was in the Japanese version. I should probably play it to find out.


A Lolo sprite hidden with the ship upgrade graphics!



I'm not clear on what those square eyeball-like things are above him, though. But I don't know much about Lolo.


This is REALLY weird! During one particular part of the ending sequence, you're shown a background made of microchips. This is stored with the background data for that part - A part of the game's title in a font that isn't used anywhere, along with what looks like text for an Option menu! As far as I know, no such option menu exists unless it's hidden in the code. That option menu font is also different from any other font used in the game, even for the hidden Sound Test.

Someone with more hacking skills than I might want to check into this. There may be a way to activate that Option Menu...

Edit: Solved some of the mysteries...


Japanese opening demo vs. American opening demo. That's why that Halken logo was in there.


It's used in the ending, too.


Japanese title screen vs. American title screen.

That explains where that crazy font came from and why it's stored on the microchip background... because the Japanese title used that font and the microchip background was seen through the letters.

No word on that Option Menu yet, though. I could not find it on the Japanese version, although the same exact text for it is stored in the same exact spot. Also, the American version lets you access a sound test by holding L & R and pressing start at the title screen, but the Japanese version does not.

Interesting that the second "1" has a green background...this usually indicates that the number was changed at some point, and the artist used the wrong palette entry to erase the original tile (though it doesn't matter much in the end, since both entries are black). The same thing happened with parts of SMB3's status bar.

Also: "Labolatory." Heehee.

After searching around the title screen, what appears to be a previously undiscovered button code surfaced. Once the title screen is finished loading (the Start Normal text is displayed), enter the following:

Select, Select, A, B, Select, Select, X, Y, Select, Select, L, R, up

It sets $01 in 7E13B5, and turns the title screen red.

During gameplay, pressing Select toggles $04 in 7E13B7. It adds/removes a blur type effect to the background.

That looks to me like it was planned for the game to be used with 3D glasses like Rad Racer, but it was never fully-implemented. I think that should definitely be on the Wiki. Unfortunately, it's impossible to get a screenshot of it. Because the effect alternates frames, any screenshots taken look normal.

I also should probably mention that for some bizarre reason, the Material Factory and the Old Capital levels were switched around in the American version. This explains why the music for those stages is switched around in the Sound Test and also why the demo shows the ship you'd normally be using only in the Old Capital stage playing the Material Factory stage.


The left is what the demo shows and the right is the actual in-game level. You can't play as that green ship on the Material Factory level, it's impossible, but the demo is based on the Japanese version where the levels are switched and you do, in fact, play as that ship on the Material Factory.


Edit: This whole "3D Mode" thing has got me wondering now about Arcana/Card Master. I wonder if the reason Hal made an SNES RPG in first-person view is because they may have planned to apply the 3D effect to it, too...

Most video editors will have an option to adjust the frame rate; just halving it might do. I don't know for sure.

If it's an AVI, you can change the video frame rate (but not the audio speed!) using something like this before you upload. With that specific tool, change scale to 1 and rate to 30. (FPS should automatically change to 30.)

Hmm... as I work with video on an infrequent basis, 'SAR' automatically makes me think of 'Standard Aspect Ratio' first and foremost. ECD appears to be a type of monitor (all these years, and why haven't I heard of an ECD monitor? ) So, maybe having the monitor connected allowed you to switch into a different aspect ratio, possibly higher resolution... and the blur effect would probably look different between a CRT and a monitor, right?

If the SNES/Super Famicom can detect whether or not it's connected to a monitor, maybe that option (if it was actually implemented) only appeared when it was connected to an ECD monitor. I wonder if there was any reference to it (or at least using it with a monitor) in the Super Famicom version's instruction book.

They may look different, but when you get in close and examine them tile by tile, you'll see those are the same tiles with all the extra space between them removed. The two parallel lines in the "skinny" N don't touch each other's tile, and the O just has the flat horizontal parts in the middle removed to give the appearance of a smooth continuous curve.

On the subject of 3D Video, I know I've seen Youtube videos specifically set up to show 3D video (with multiple options on which method to display it, even) but I have no idea how that would be set up. I just know that they do accomodate it somehow. I wish I knew more about it to help.

About the "SAR" and "EDC", I'd guess the former simply is supposed to be "START", reusing the "T" of "OPTION". This doesn't explain "EDC" yet, tho, but it's probably another word reusing "O", "P", "T", "S", "A" and/or "R", but probably not the "ION", as that appears to be squished onto those three tiles and not spread evenly (8-8-8 pixels).
