Actually, speed doesn't matter. It's usually triggered by a bug that occurs with Link's position when dashing over a north/south screen boundary. Since that boundary crossing has to be dashed with the Pegasus Boots, not walked, many people think that the whole journey must be fast

On Flying Omelette's web page there's something about Zelda 2 having unused dialog which you can see when you use the fairy glitch in a town. I don't know if it's just a mistake, but it should be checked out.

Might be a mistake. That's from a long time ago and I'm notoriously lazy about updating old pages.

What I remember was that when I used that glitch to enter the "phantom" town, there were some lines of dialogue I couldn't remember seeing anywhere else, but I never actually played through the whole game again looking for them.

Yeah, the complexity of the procedure and its tendency to not always work made me think it was a convenient way to reproduce a glitch, rather than a planned method. I've managed to accidentally do the same with other holes. The fact that it leads back to Link's house also supports this theory (only place the developers could be sure you'd never be trapped in).

It does seem like a jerk move though if they didn't put in any legitimate way to access it. Or has it just not been discovered...? Maybe they just figured the game was buggy enough that you'd stumble across it eventually, thus leading to a lot of chaos and confusion as people explain how they found it and others reply with a completely different method, and none of them can reproduce it.

This is one of those cases where a FCEUX-esque code/data logger would be useful, since you could disassemble the code and compare it to what actually got run to see if there are any missing chunks that might indicate an undiscovered thing.

Really, just one more reason someone should honestly get some of the other emulators fixed up and sucking less. SNES9x's Geiger branch is total crap and VBA's "disassembler" is a complete joke..

Geiger is working on a new version, so we'll see how that turns out. I'll look into this "glitch" when I get the new version.

Any idea how far along he is on that?

Also, Zelda 2 idea! What if we came up with a map modifier code to see if there's anything such as unused random battle maps or something? It might be interesting to see what pops up.

That would be really cool. I think the FDS versions need to be checked. They may have the unused stuff cut out of the American version.

Yeah, good point. I remember a couple of differences between the FDS and the NES versions.

Most notably, different regular battle music, "talking" sound effects for the NPCs, and different graphics for the overworld enemies.

I'm also working on getting to Darunia to try out that town glitch that's on FO's site to see if I can confirm anything.

EDIT: Some text says "Magic key reads... treasure of Kasuto" when you talk to an old woman. Used or unused? I think it's just grabbing data from another town or something.

One thing I didn't know about Zelda 2 is that sometimes characters' dialogue will change if you go back and talk to them at later points in the game. I never knew Error gave you a clue about the King's Tomb until someone pointed it out to me because I found the King's Tomb on my own and never knew he said anything other than "I am Error". So, if I was wrong about anything being unused, that's probably the reason why.

Also, only slightly related, but one time when I was messing around with that glitch, the game (for some reason) thought I already found the lost child and I didn't have to do that part to continue.

I don't recall anything unused in that text dump, but then again, I'm not super familiar with the game.

However, I do find something strange with the "River Devil". One of the townspeople warns you that he eats those who are weak. However, you never actually fight it or are threatened to be eaten by it or something along those lines. I wonder if that's our first clue to investigate.

Zelda 2 - I remember reading that using an overworld WTW code and then having enemies attack you on a mountain tile would bring up an unused side scrolling area.

Well upon a first check of that, JLukas, it does kinda work that way. It starts you off on the right side of a cemetery area. Depending on if you hit the blob or the evil man thing, red lizard men will also show up. If not, you'll just get the red flying eyes.

The Game Genie code "AAOETYZA" should access the walk through walls in overworld. Give it a shot. =)

There are differences between the Japanese and USA versions of Zelda II, too. Do you want those documented?

Basically:
- REFLECT was called REFLEX in the Japanese version
- Many EXP values for enemies were changed
- You can always select which skill to upgrade at an EXP threshold, but they're all reduced to the lowest one on a Game Over
- The EXP thresholds are a lot lower; getting the 1-UP after you're maxed out requires only 4000 points, not 9000
- The battle music is different
- Dungeon palettes are different. IIRC, palace 2 uses the same whitish-grey as Palace 1, and there also aren't as many palace tilesets.

Also, I believe that Gooma, the boss of the Island Palace, is a brand new boss for the U.S. I think that in the Japanese version, it was just another rendezvous with Horsehead.

I actually have a Famicom now and the Japanese Zelda 2, so this gives me a good reason to hook it up somewhere and play it. Only problem is finding a place to hook the thing up.

Also, it'd be nice to find someone who can translate the dialogue in the game in the Japanese version to see what's different. The translation is a mite iffy in the U.S. version.

Oh yes.

I think there's another Horsehead in Palace 5 near the false wall, which was changed to a Blue Ironknuckle in the USA, and the final boss of Palace 5 is another Helmethead, but it's been a while

Just to let you guys know, the Quebec version of Link's Awakening was dumped on assemblergames.com, there may be another hidden song in there.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
