Was he aggressive or seem unstable when he boarded with you? I hate stories like these because it makes you question everyone's sanity. And also because it says police didn't say what caused the altercation so we never know the whole story. Not saying he was right in stabbing the guy, but I'd just like to know what happened.

He was pretty weird. I definitely had a reason for wanting to move out. He never stopped talking, wasn't very courteous (And I'm pretty damn easy to please), would spray large clouds of AXE in a tiny room, and like, only really ate rice and peanut butter (There was a financial reason for this). I got him pretty angry once before I killed a bug in the room by hitting the wall, at around 10PM when he was trying to sleep.. Wasn't very loud at all, but he went all to talk about how rude that was, etc. Then like, a week later he turns on the LIGHT in the dorm at 6AM because he was going to work. This is a 1-room dorm, and he claims that he was trying to be quiet. He also basically called me a pansy (He kept saying I needed to "Man up.") when I had either food poisoning, a migraine, or both one day, and basically spent the entire day on the verge of puking. In fact, he kept trying to talk to me, so I had to walk 10 blocks or so to my girlfriend's class to get her apartment keys, and then over to her apartment just so I could be left alone. That was probably the worst day I've experienced in quite a few years.

Then again, he was also halfway well-groomed back then. I have no idea what may have caused him to go off the deep end.
