I was just woken up at about 4 in the morning by a fire alarm.

The fire department was already there when I went outside into the cold night, and they only took about half an hour to put it out and let us all back into the building. I smelled smoke, but I don't know where the fire was or how big it was (probably not very big, at least).

This is the 3rd time I've lived in a building that had a fire alarm go off, IIRC, and they usually seem to go off in the late night or early morning, in my experience.

Does anyone else have any fire or other disaster stories?

Seems every day, often two or three times, a firetruck screams by the window. Really makes me wonder how people are managing to catch things on fire that often. That's not even counting small fires that are uneventfully extinguished by those nearby in a few seconds.
Maybe people just have lousy fire alarms that go off at so much as a cigarette?

A few months ago they tested the fire alarm in the apartment complex. At 9 AM. For half an hour.

We moved out of our first house because of the neighbourhood twats kids. A few weeks later, next door caught fire and our old house got some of the fire damage. Lucky, or what?

At my old college, people used to set the alarm off all the time by burning popcorn. It was very sensitive, since it was also kinda used to catch people smoking in the building or whatever... kinda silly measure that makes the fire department dispatch when there could be a serious situation. :|

One interesting thing that happened though was that someone was playing soccer in the hallways or something, and the ball hit one of the sprinklers, and I guess it has some kind of thing that breaks (made of wax?) when it gets too hot, but in this case the ball broke it and set off all the sprinklers on the floor. It soaked everyone's stuff. Luckily it wasn't my floor but it was my building. The floors are isolated enough that it doesn't run down really, though. I had to stay outside for a while.

Before my Freshman year of high school started, the first building of my high school caught on fire. It was about a year or so before they fixed it and we were able to use it again.

When I was around 18 years old and still living with my dad in the trailer park, the trailer behind our caught on fire. It was a huge fire and my dad and I were worried that the fire would jump to our trailer. Just to be safe, dad took the water hose out and was spraying our trailer with water and the trailer that was on fire. The trailer that had caught on fire was a total loss.

I was around 18 or 19 when my future hubby and I were getting off of the Florida turnpike. The off ramp was a circular one and we didn't notice what was waiting for us at the bottom. The accident had to have happened minutes before we got there. A gas tanker truck was on fire. Once we reached the bottom, he stopped the car. The heat was so intense. But the only way to get around it, was to drive onto the grass, inches from the tanker, which we did, quickly and safely.

Several times I've heard news of the Everglades being on fire because of some dumb ass. A couple times it happened while I worked nearby and was able to see and smell the smoke.

My old apartment had a ridiculously sensitive smoke detector that would go off pretty much every time I used the toaster, even if there was no visible smoke and even though the toaster was in a different room. I was always concerned that it would trip the building's fire alarm and make hundreds of people evacuate because I was fixing breakfast, so I took the battery out of the smoke detector. My apartment had another smoke detector that wasn't so ridiculous (or just farther away, maybe).

I also had a ridicolous fire alarm. Toaster incident too. However, we live in a house so no one heard anything
We also took out the batteries so now we don't have ANY fire alarms.
I live a dangerous life now

Every weekend, someone at one of the dorms (not mine) would prank-pull the fire alarm. It made people really pissed off.

I've set off the fire alarm twice. Once was because I took a long, hot shower with the door cracked open. The steam set it off.

The other time, my sister and I wanted to make (homemade) caramel popcorn. We didn't ever actually confirm a fire, but the bag was black, it sounded like it was still bubbling (read: crackling, as in fire), and when we tossed it into the sink to douse it, there were massive plumes of black smoke billowing from the bag. Everything was charred to bits, too. Mom wasn't home at the time, and did not appreciate our cooking experiment.

Once, my dad tried to make popcorn in the microwave but apparently typed in an extra digit, so instead of (say) 3:15 he ended up setting the timer for 31:55 or something. My mom said that eventually, the popcorn stopped making popping noises, but she was playing on the computer or something and wasn't paying full attention. Supposedly, the burned popcorn could still be smelled until they moved out of that house not long after.

I did something similar back when I had a microwave with an analogue timer. Analogue timers aren't a very good idea for microwaves because, unlike with a conventional oven or toaster oven, you often have to put things in a microwave for tiny amounts of time, like a minute or less, which it can't time accurately. Plus I wasn't thinking and put something in for 2 minutes instead of 15 seconds, then went to the bathroom and smelled smoke. "Oh, no!" I went to the microwave, and smoke just poured out of the thing. I opened the windows and hoped that I wouldn't die during the night from all the smoke in my apartment.

...how tired were you again?

As for my fire experiences, I don't think I've ever had anything too major happen. Worst scenario I can think of is when I put a burger brought home from Wendy's or some other similar fast food that was COVERED IN FOIL in the microwave. Good thing I was standing there watching, because not more than six seconds after pressing Start it was lit. Not lit-lit thankfully, just a small fire that died off soon after I stopped the process. I know, not much to speak of. But it's the best I can think of, do you still want to fault me for it?

I asked downstairs, and apparently the fire was just caused by somebody cooking or something equally innocuous. The smoke alarm had gone off but nobody reported anything and they couldn't find where it was coming from, so they evacuated the building and called the fire department.

Went through 3 hurricanes in 1 year. Back in 2004, we moved down to Florida in June I think. 3 months later we had gone through 3 hurricanes and after the first one we were without power for 8 days. There was a lot of damage to cars at our apartment complex from falling trees, but thankfully neither of ours were hit. One guy's got hit it was brand new, only 3 days old.

Thankfully I've had zero issues with fires during or after a hurricane.

Was yours alright?

I recall a few other "fun" experiences with fires or near-fires:

In high school, every day for a week some kid set off the fire alarm. He didn't anticipate that people would eventually start watching from the outside and see him running from the exit right near the alarm that was pulled. Fail!

When I was maybe 8 I put some toast in the toaster, went into the other room and forgot about it. The only other person home was my father in the same room. A few minutes later, the alarm went off, and we opened the door to find the main room filled with black smoke pouring from the toaster that had somehow jammed itself. It hadn't actually ignited, so we dumped out the black crud from inside and vented the smoke out, and made something else, and kept an eye on the oven.

I got woke up by a fire alarm one night. It took a few seconds to wake up enough to figure out what it was (alarm clock took a beating, and then I pushed some buttons on the stereo, before OH SHIT). Turns out that alarm warns you of low battery by going off at 3AM.

I discovered the campus microwaves for some reason can't cook popcorn. They just burn it. Didn't set off any alarms, but the bag turned a nice crispy black every time.

I once put a fancy plate in the microwave, only to quickly discover a decorative ring around its edge was made of copper. Pretty neat sparks.

Then there was a laptop repair gone wrong. Turn it on, CD-ROM still doesn't power up. Turn it off (was in DOS, so just hit the button)... nothing happens. Yank the cord, the screen freaks out. I thought it was a pretty neat crash, until I saw smoke rising from inside. Brief panic, but pulling the battery stopped it. Later discovered a screw stuck to the power board.

Yea, our trailer was alright, thanks for asking. I was pretty worried during the fire and I can remember how fast my heart was beating.

Yeah, with popcorn you neeeeeed to watch it, just like it says on the bag. Otherwise you'll either end up with burned popcorn or a whole lot of kernels. There's no excuse for letting it get so bad that it starts to smoke.

Also, who here leaves the smoke detector chirping when it has a low battery and never bothers to change it? That seems to be a common occurrence. My grandma did that a lot; drove me nuts. I would've changed it if we had batteries and I had money to spend on batteries (9v batteries are expensive!).

Flue fire when I was 8 or 9, that wasn't the real emergency though. My older brother wouldn't stop putting his hands in my face while we were waiting in the car, I ended up biting his thumb down to the bone.

I hate that chirping sound, so annoying.

The apartment complex sends people out to check on the fire alarms and smoke detectors to make sure that they are working.

That chirping sound woke me up once at like 5:30 in the morning. I had no idea what it was, I thought maybe it was some other dangerous situation like carbon monoxide I ended up going outside and calling my mom.
