I used to often get only around 4-5 hours of sleep a night, every night. I'd wake up and still be tired, then take an afternoon nap. Damn 10:00 in the morning physics class.

No matter how many hours of sleep I get, I HATE waking before 8. When I was at school, it's bed at 9 then up at 6:30. Still not enough sleep

Yep, I was in Germany in early 2008 (6 hours ahead of Detroit), had some really late evening classes in late 2008, then suddenly got hit by early morning classes and never really adjusted.
Getting used to working nights left my head feeling heavy for a solid week..
But, now that I'm back to nights everything is good - except for the few things that REQUIRE me to be up during the day... like moving my furniture into the new apartment where they don't let you move in until 10:30am.
I still haven't gotten used to nights yet. Especially since I'm working an extra day. When I was on the night shift before I would stay up until 4am. Trying to get to that point.

Yeah, when we went from Michigan to Las Vegas a few times, I'd get major jet lag as I was used to sleeping 9-6 for school. So I'd get up at like 3 in the morning, then the stuff that people under 21 can do, like the video arcades and amusement parks, didn't open until 10.
Yeah, I'm permanency jet lagged and can never buy booze when I want to.

Originally posted by AnyaI've never had a problem with jet lag. Even when I went from Florida to Las Vegas.
The first night we were in New York visiting my brother, we were up until about 2am local time (only 11pm for us). After that, we got used to going to bed early. Even our son only took 1 night to acclimate to the change in time. Coming back was fine, as well.
For some reason I have trouble getting up at 6am no matter what time I go to bed. But even if I get sleep really late, I can wake up at 7am no problem.
There are methods and books about it. We just made sure to take red-eye flights (or close to it) there and back so that our son would sleep. He's a good sleeper at night, so we took flights after his bed time. He slept the whole time there and back. And we had a seat just for him since most people don't like to take late flights.
I've taken a few red-eye flights. It seems that Murphy's Law guaranteed that every long eastbound flight I take is a red-eye.
I have a hard time sleeping on vehicles where I can't comfortably lay down, so I usually just slept for a few hours after I eventually reached my destination. I did manage some sleep on the 2-day train ride, to my relief, but that could have been because of exhaustion (I only got an hour of sleep the night before I left).
