I can't remember where I made a similar thread, my mind hasn't been right these days. Okay here's the deal everyone, I have the latest Gimp version & I have Photoshop Cs4. And most of you know I draw my own cartoons, this is turning my brain for months now.

How do I color my cartoons using either Gimp or Photoshop Cs4? Cause I've been trying & trying with no luck whatsoever, even the You Tube video go so fast they don't really teach anything in my opinion.

Thanks Community for taking a look at this thread... :3

Is there something in particular you're having trouble with?

The common method is to have your line art on one layer, then make a new layer under your line art, and using a brush with 100% opacity, lay down your base colors (flat colors, in other words).

Don't be afraid to erase if you go outside the lines.

My method involves making three layers, one totally transparent to do the outlines, and the one below it a totally white layer with the opacity less than 100%, and the bottom layer being the sketch layer.

It works, but I really want greater color gradienting in my comics, since using the lasso tends to make a very thin white outline on the edge. And besides, I want to do it manually anyway.

If you're already tracing over all the outlines and filling them in, you might just get Inkscape and make SVG versions of them. Vector graphics rock.

Drag's method seems easier for pencil drawings though. Put your drawing in a layer at less than full opacity, and draw colours on a white layer below it. Or use the colour replacement tool to colourize areas you shaded with the pencil.

A very, very basic method I use is to, in Photoshop, make separate layers for what you want to color. Set the layer properties to "multiply", then start coloring in what you want to color in. Do the shading on a separate layer.

It's not really that great-looking, but it's at least something to get you started anyway. If you want more info on that one, get in touch with me outside the forum here, I could probably explain it to you better.

Well, how's it not working? Do you have any practice pieces where it didn't work?
