It's been a month since the new layout and I still hate it, using xx-pirate just to avoid it ... and the old layout wasn't affected by the background feature, so it's definitely not a doodle thing

I don't mind the new background feature actually, but I'd rather have it blank by default so it doesn't waste bandwidth or distract too much ... I'd probably use a simple pattern or something like that

I don't really mind the new Google layout, but it does get a bit annoying having that sidebar take up space in the results. Youtube, now that one sucks.

It's a shame though that even Google can't get one basic web design rule right: If you set the foreground colour, set the background colour too, and vice-versa. (Though I believe they fixed that on the main page. Still on other pages and all over Youtube.)

Google Chrome + Stylish works fine for problems like these... but I don't use a dark-colored theme anyway. =P

By now I've gotten used to the sidebar and don't care anymore.

I thought for a minute I was damned LOL! I have a background when I sign into gmail, I think they went back to white now.

And I thought I was the only one to misread that.

I have a background for my gmail account too - and actually have for a couple years now. I barely ever see the Google homepage, though - I usually just use the seatch bar in the top right.

It's an enigma
----------------------------------------------------
To be honest I dont hate the feature, I just hate the fact that they rolled it out without warning instead of going "Hey, we have a new feature, check it out!" like they usually do.

Just a step away from their norm is all.

Gmail has had themes for a while. Most are ugly though.

That's my normal solution, but I've disabled nearly all extensions to track down a bug. I guess now would be a good time to turn Stylish back on, actually... I'm pretty sure I've found the responsible party. (Flash, go figure.)
