I went to a Wal-Mart Vision Center today (rent-a-doc, I guess.. thanks, Mom).

Granted, considering where I went I'm not entirely sure (okay, I'm highly doubtful) this doctor isn't a quack, and that my prescription isn't completely invalid, but you can see my current glasses (bottom right) and my new prescripton (bottom left), as well as how I look glassesless (top left) and with glasses based on current prescription (top right).

Yikes.

Oh yeah, thank Riketz for reminding me:

Ouch. That's nasty. It's so dumb that poor eyesight is a dominant gene.

My eyesight is slightly better than 20/20.

Whenever I go for my eyes, I'm considered someone with a good eyesight.

However, I have to do a few tests (as my mother has some eye disease)

My left eye is inferior and shows things as blurry, but the doctors (who are professional eye doctors in this case) have said it's irrelevant as long as I don't go around with my right eye closed, so I don't use glasses or anything like that

I have such horrible eyesight it's not even funny. My current prescription is -11.00/-10.50.

I swear I'm legally blind by now

Also, Wal-Mart Vision Centers suck. I used to have my glasses done there, but they were kinda shoddy and eventually stopped supporting prescriptions over +/- 8.00, so I switched to a JC Penney vision clinic.
For a department store, they sure make awesome glasses, and they threw in anti-glare and reduced lenses for free (thank God, since my glasses are now coming up to over $300/year)

Well, at this point, I don't need glasses, and my eyesight always comes out fine on tests and stuff, but both my parents(moreso my father) need glasses, and my grandfather has macular degeneration, so I don't know what that means for me later in life.

Aha! So people with vision issues do see things gaussian-blur-style. I knew it! Having said that, I honestly have wondered what normal sight is like for people who need glasses. I guess now I know.

Vision tests (real ones, not inernet ones) for me have always resulted "better than perfect." What to they say perfect is these days? 20/20?

I can see miniscule detail at great distances and percieve very minor changes in color. I can see the texture of the wallpaper on the opposite side of this room from where I'm sitting. I can look out the window at that barn out back and count individual leaves on the tree next to it.

In those color tests where they show you colored circles and ask you to tell them the number, I always see all the numbers, even the ones I'm not supposed to be able to see with correct color perception.

So yeah. My eyes are weird. Watch me need glasses in ten years.

Guess that's why your GuyPerfect. ;D

The one thing about my vision, though, I can see detail close-up extremely well.

I have a friend who is 20/20 in his right eye and 20/800 in his left. The doctors gave him glasses almost solely for the purpose of protection; they didn't want his right eye to somehow become injured and gave him glasses as a bit of a protection mechanism against that (although while they were at it, they improved his one eye as much as they could. I wore the glasses and the one eye was so distorted that it made me dizzy.)

Actually, during the test, it looked more like this:
(AEIUO sample letters, normally something else)

Though during non-test, it was more like this:
(note: ghosting border not included; Paint, sigh)

Anything bright, for me, tends to have that weird streaky problem.

I had lazy eye a while back with my left eye apparently. However, due to my glasses always not working well (as in, they kept unscrewing on the left side) I stopped wearing them. It helped a bit, though.

What's the leading cause of incorrect vision? Is it something with the lens's inability to focus, or the way that light is absorbed by the retina? Or something else?

Actually, it just looks like something too close for your eyes to focus on. Try it. Cover one eye, and look really close at your keyboard. Then back up until you can start to see the letters. That's what it looks like. (Unless it looks like just a Gaussian blur, in which case that's not what it looks like.)

I've sometimes wondered if my vision might be a bit weak, for two reasons:
1) I tend to have trouble reading things in the distance, but that distance is far enough that I can't be sure if it's unusually close.
2) When I'm up late, my vision starts to blur, but I suspect it's just because I'm tired.

I've only had it tested twice. The first time I was 20/20, but that was ages ago. The second time they didn't give me a measurement, they just acknowledged that it was good enough to drive with.

I have 20/15 vision as well. Indeed, despite starting at a monitor all day, people usually come to me for help with seeing extremely small things.
