Fucking brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

One of the many reason I quit.

Sounds like my Computer Science teacher; after my assignments got deleted, I tried to use a Novell recovery tool (network drive, all that joy) to fix it, but it was a console program and sure enough I lost all my assignments and got booted because I couldn't finish it in time.

(Oh, and they took me out of it the next semester, even though it was the only class I gave a shit enough to pass)

My school (well, before I graduated) filters out websites based on county statistics.

Which was... weird, as when I started school last year they blocked Acmlm's Board when I was the only person in the entire county that used it. Didn't block Google Mail either.

Also, I could bring in a laptop, play a freaking game on it, and the dean not give two shits about it. I really did do that too. Saw him walk by, eye my laptop, and he did nothing. Why should he? He allowed MP3 players by students all the time even though those were not supposed to be on campus.

Lucky you. My dean was an asshole... I had an old, old laptop I used for taking notes in Biology and such, and he nearly confiscated it because he though I "was using it on the network".

Yes, even though it has no network port.

Idiot.

I brought out my laptop in class at times with nobody caring. Only person that cared was a substitute that thought I was looking at porn. Told me to turn it off. So I hit shut down and waited for it.

She got pissed I wasn't putting it away and left a note for my teacher saying I wasn't listening to her. Good thing nobody gave a shit, not even my teacher when she returned. She knew what I did on my laptop. Hell, I could have my laptop when I had English III Honors in 11th grade and my teacher would be teaching! She knew what I was doing then (Photoshop crap) and I actually listened more than without it, as without it I fell asleep...

My school is nuts about computer activity in general, the Comp Sci room is on a LAN, but not actually connected to the internet, and the library/'media center' computers have blocked everything off. You can't access anything on those computers excluding what's on the desktop, and they're very restricting on when you can use them too. I think I was allowed to use those computers a grand total of twice all last year. The only upside is that our Comp Sci teacher is lethargic, and possibly drunk. So it's possible to play games if you're far away from him. Of course, this adversely affects actual learning of programming, the only time people play games is during after-school things.

I pretty much exploit the fact that my school can't secure their wireless networks. plenty of DS gaming in the middle of Physics.

Hm, I've never tried to use the DS on my school's wireless network, but I know it's internet filtering extends to laptops and such hooked into the wireless network...

If I were to bring in a DS, It would be confiscated before you could say "I'm holding it for after school"
It also pisses me off that last year, I had a Comp Awareness teacher ( who though minimizing a window closed it) who decided that even when my project was done, he would not allow me to do anything slightly fun (even if it was not blocked) T_T
now the nice comp awareness teach is back, and I have gym this year.
Joy.

We're not really allowed to have electronics out, they are supposed to be "off and away" but noone follows that and the teachers even give in. One woman teacher last year let us use them after tests only if she couldn't hear it and we had to quickly take them off if the principal come in.

I've had mixed experiences with my school. None of the places I frequently go to on the Internet are blocked, but I know that places like Myspace, Facebook, etc. are. However we all use proxies to get around it. The administration must not care too much about blocking because our school policy is "If you're on the Internet without permission, you could lose your privilege to the internet for the rest of the school year."

Some teachers don't care though. I know my Physics teacher didn't and even was interested in some of the stuff we did online. However, other teachers... My Computer Grahics teacher is extremely anal about using the internet. Use it and lose it is his mentality.

I don't really have much reason to go online during school. Not worth losing internet at school to me.

At my school rules say no electronics and/or backpacks period(no students follow that rules). If rules keep getting tighter and even worse decisions made example most senior class are on 1st floor and gave every senior lockers on the 2nd floor. There is no wifi at school and no software bypass to blocked sites. Which is weird since the school population is mainly jocks, hicks, and emo kids.

Unfortunately, my school's wifi is encrypted, so I have to rely on getting lucky with outside connections if I want to browse the internet. :/ (hint: the PSP is better for web browsing here)

...And did I mention everything's fucking blocked? The school even blocked its own homepage, once...

That is just sad. My school doesn't seem to know what it's doing, some stuff is blocked but all you have to do is use any old generic proxy to get around it.

At my College, I have access to the administrator password and do anything I want, all the time. Nobody even tries to stop me.

Of course, when I mean 'anything', I mean 'quietly browse Wikipedia and research stuff to help repair computers here.' Yeah. I'm somebody people can trust with access like that.

Heh, at one point one of my high school teachers just told everyone the admin password. They really didn't know a damn thing about computers.

At college they have free wifi, but you have to go through some (seemingly MAC-based) authentication thing the first time you use it, which means I'll have to spoof my DS' MAC address with my laptop. (None of the browsers I can get working support https connections.) I haven't used it much, but what few pages I have looked at, I haven't been stopped.

My school has a super strict policy about the computer usage. If you are even on a site other than what you are supposed to be on, then you will probably get suspended.....

But heck, I wrote this post on a blackberry in the back of the classroom during study period.

It's a layout... that I worked hard on. ^_^
----------------------------------------------------

My school basically has a "no electronics" policy, save for cellphones which must be off and out of sight, otherwise CONFISCATE.

Oh, and last year, someone almost got suspended for going to paypal. So yes, my school is basically net-nazi central

I'd have to say the computer administrators know less about computers than the people who set them up. Proven by the fact that they appearently thought Word is included in Windows.

As for internet filtering, Google something like "CGIProxy" and you'll get through with no problems. Now if only the wifi wasn't encrypted...

Now that I think of it, the computers used to be on some kind of network system that had been set up by some students, and it worked perfectly. Then the district admins decided that they had to watch everything we're doing, and switched the computers to their network domain. Then came the security holes, and some game was installed on several computers and couldn't be removed thanks to some program the admins wanted called Deep Freeze restoring it whenever the computer booted.

Then there were the laptops. They loaded those with so much useless crap, it took five minutes for it to log in if it worked at all! It was faster to boot them in safe mode, and the teacher actually had me do that because nobody could use them! All thanks, once again, to the district administrators.
