I've been considering trying out Project Wonderful on the wiki. Something to boost our hosting-o-meter, and (in the event we somehow become wildly popular -- ha ha, fat chance) get us on a nice VPS or something.


(I've actually been half-considering this for Jul too, since AdSense is a total damn joke and it'd be nice to put some stuff back on the board for logged out users. Maybe incentive to donate... I know I'd be a lot more inclined to update if it started paying me, haha.)


Just as a note, SMW Central has ads from PW too, along with a bunch of other sites I've seen.

I've had Project Wonderful recommended to me, too.

I had AdSense for awhile, but the earnings were pretty darn pitiful. Then there were three events, the death of Michael Jackson, the release of the 2nd Transformers movie, and the release of the Ghostbusters video game, that all happened around the same time and caused my site to get a tremendous increase in hits for one month. Google responded by quickly canceling my AdSense account and accusing me of telling the people on my forums to make all those extra hits (which is great, because most of my forum members use ad blockers, so they don't even see the ads).

I even sent them screen captures of my stats pages proving that most of the extra hits came from their own damn search engine sending them to me, as well as a link to a post I made where I noticed the increased hits several weeks before they canceled the account.

They just replied back with something like,

"Sorry, but your community is still a threat to our advertisers"

???

So, yeah, even if you find a way to make more money with AdSense, or just have it happen without trying, they'll probably just cancel your account anyway.

And I will never donate money if it removes ads --
I'll donate because I want to, not because I get something for it

it feels like it destroys the whole idea of donating

I'm totally in favor of Project Wonderful, no BS ads about stuff nobody cares about, no links to shady sites, just people like you and me wanting a little more traffic to their small sites. Most of which are pretty interesting.

That all sounds awfully familiar, right down to the "threat to our advertisers" part, except we weren't even accused of anything. We were right on the verge of getting our first $100, too. I'm pretty sure the appeal was sent directly to an auto-responder.

Google can die in a fire for that whole fiasco. Hope their affiliates enjoyed the free advertising.

I really think the best thing about PW ads is that it's actually based on people who want to be on your site rather than some random content-matching crap (cue sex bolt ads )

In any case, I put an app in for Jul... I'll probably get around to doing the Wiki version if/when I get the new skin in order.
