Installing Bioshock? Be careful. Planning to use one of those USB fingerprint recognition devices? Watch out for rootkits.

Man i hate it when they go as far as this kind of stuff. If the installation errors out enough, they are all pretty much screwed ¬_¬

I remember, and miss fondly, the days of "CD key:".

DRM is just going too far, and in cases like this, it's much more likely to take away from the enjoyment of a game if you have to fight with the software to get it to work...

It's like this: if I buy a game, I should be able to do what I want with it.

But they would be afraid that you would distribute it to everyone you know thus causing a huge loss in profit. -__-

Yet the hackers are not affected (by this crap) as there is a cracked version without it online. :rolf:

Yay for companies screwing over their userbase!

It's a layout... that I worked hard on. ^_^
----------------------------------------------------

Really, the more companies try to put their software behind oodles and oodles of padlocks, the more backlash they're going to get from the public...

Not to mention Sony got busted for the rootkit stuff before.

Silly Sony, havent you learned yet?

Stop spreading FUD. It's not a rootkit, it's not DRM. It's a simple fucking copy protection scheme. It's annoying, but it's not invasive. Christ.

EDIT: Having said that, BioShock is coded like fucking shit for PC. If you have a 360, that's easily the version to go for.

There's a difference between Copy Protection and DRM? Could've fooled me.

Edit+: On that note, I fail to see how making yourself show up on rootkit scanners, installing hidden registry keys everywhere, and then requiring you to reverify after the slightest hardware change is not invasive.

The rootkit is with the USB fingerprint scanner, not with Bioshock. It alters the kernel to hide files just like the last one did. And yes, Bioshock's "protection" is DRM.

I remember when there was no limit to how many times you could install stuff. I must've installed Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge on at least five computers and never had troubles.

I personally hate DRM, but what're we to do?

even if we all hate it, we are a minority, so if we boycotted it, the average (...stupid, unpolitically motivated...) people (the majority by far, especially in the US) will not participate with us.

companies care about making money -- they don't care if they lose users like us, we bring in barely any of their income. The gaming market is so mainstream these days, its geared towards popular/normal people rather than the nerds it used to serve.

You've basically answered your own question. The problem? Your average consumer doesn't know what DRM is or why they should care. The solution? Educate the masses.

DRM will go away once companies have a viable way of making games into a service, instead of software. Because if it is a service, no need to install, or very little installation as all the data is hosted by the companies themselves.

In the meantime, one alternative is an RSA-style authentication scheme similar to what many companies use to authenticate people who need to get on the corporate network from the outside. For me to enter my company's VPN network, I have to append a six-digit code to the pin I already have. So, CD-Key + PIN + RSA Code should help the problem. I guess the draw back is that you can't lose the RSA code generator or something.

Or, we need fast enough networks where the program is stored on the company's servers and serviced through an internet-like browser solely used to play the game.

So yeah, Software as a service is probably the better approach

And what happens when a company goes out of business? What happens when 2K Games or SecuROM dies?

The advantage of "software" is that anyone can make an archival copy. There's no external factors; as long as the hardware and software are still in good condition, you can enjoy them as long as you want, trade them, whatever -- case in point, my NES still works after 15 years of joy.

But.... if playing something requires you to download or verify something from some arbitrary server, what happens when it dies? The game becomes worthless. There's no value left, any potential joy from it is erased and the game dies.

I don't know about you, but I am not willing to pay any amount of money (aside from token amounts, like $5) for something that will just suddenly stop working depending on something I have no control over.

That's one thing I don't like about those newer PC games which use mandatory authentication. It's difficult, if not impossible, to play legitimately obtained second-hand media like you can with normal software or home video releases.

What if I went to buy say, Half-Life 2 for PC used from a thrift store? It'd fail the test and couldn't be played without using an illegal crack or serial generator.

But by continuing to play your crusty old NES, you're not giving game companies your money! You're practically getting entertainment for free and that makes you a terrible person!

Support your entertainment overlords! Buy a PS3!

By the way, what does BioShock have to do with Sony?

Also, I love how the newly cracked version of BioShock has less than a hassle than the hard copy. Ah, yes. Bog your game down so much with shit because you're scared it will be stolen, that you fuck up the actual gaming experience, and it's stolen anyways. Good work, dudes!
