So, there's those unused HUD elements still buried inside the ROM. Problem being: They seem to be CI-type textures, but without a palette to go with anymore. Thus they look something like this:


(disregard the colors on the second one, that was my attempt to reconstruct them from blurry JPEG prototype screenshots featuring a similar gauge)

What to do with them? Add them to the Wiki the way they are, or should I try cleaning them up a bit more so that they're a bit more recognizable? Or are they actually used in the game, which I'm rather sure they aren't, and I was just too stupid to find the references to them?

(Also, semi-off-topic: I extracted those images, as well as the 1996 Copyright, with a tool derived from OZMAV2's texture converter. I guess it's similar to N64Gfx, just without the importing, but I was too lazy to look for that one. Anyone interested?)

I guess just pick a palette that looks best and throw them up. If you can find the images in a magazine or whatever, go ahead and put those up too, to give it some context.

That said, is the meter texture actually right? The bar itself looks kind of broken.

Mario Kart uses some CI-type images, but the palette seems to be generated on the fly, such that the format basically becomes RGBA 3328. How does that look with these images?

How bizarre. Was the alpha transparency just the image dumper fucking up, or was that an artifact of you "fixing" the colors (and can we get a normal version)?

Freshly ripped, with the same arbitrary palette. The broken look of the second image was most likely my fault, I guess when I added the alpha transparency.

HyperHacker: Tried it, but unless I messed up, that just made it worse.

RahanAkero: Got those from the US version, 7th file in the DMA table which goes from 0x86F2C0 to 0x886810 in the ROM.

As a thought -- since I'm no n64 hacker, and I dunno how on earth one would extract images from an n64 rom -- have you tried poking around in the Japanese rom? It was released a good four months before the US one; maybe the palette might not be as borked, or the other beta HUD elements (like that nifty circular lifebar!) would be present. :o

God, I'm fucking stupid. The palette IS THERE, in the Japanese AND in the US version. But I 1) didn't look in the right place, and 2) had the CI palette conversion code fucked up anyway!

More shit in the same area forthcoming, but probably not much right now as it's nighttime here and I should go to sleep. Will look for one or two things, tho...

37 images in total, no guarantees that they're all unused (like some numbers 0-9, who knows if they're the used ones or not), but there don't seem to be any references to them...
