So I have a clock with a thermometer on it, and it's always seemed to read too high. When it feels like 15°C, it'd show 27. Last night I thought it must be close to 25, and it showed 28. So I turned the heat down (even though I'm pretty certain it wasn't on to begin with) to roughly 18, and today it shows 29. I turn the heat down and the display goes up, hmm.

Recently I got an outdoor one as well. Inside, it seemed to be consistent with the clock. I stuck it in the window, and today it was showing 35°C, when it was clearly (as the weather report confirmed) closer to 5. I'd put a piece of cardboard behind it so it wouldn't be affected by sunlight and wind, and it still reads high even at night.

Why can I not find accurate thermometers?

My parents had an outdoor thermometer encased in glass. If the sun shone on it, it might register like 100°F when it's really barely above freezing.

I wonder if it's a greenhouse effect thing, with the glass trapping the heat close to the thermometer.

Mine is in the window, but not encased; there's a screen behind it. I thought sunlight might be a problem but it does the same at night. I'm not sure I'd be allowed to attach it to the wall outside. (and I just know I'd drop a screw into the snow... can't do it from the ground. )

"A horrible person". That's what it says. "A horrible person."

We weren't even testing for that.

Mine is also like that. If it works at all, it reports way too high temperatures.

People say it's because the sensor is positioned in a corner. I don't believe this can be the cause.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
