So, while I was updating the CRF with a bit of hidden text in Commando (taken from CaH4e3's site), I noticed something. The text reads in part as follows: "MY NEXT MAKE GAME IS -CAPTAIN HIGEMARU- PLEASE PLAY IT. YOU KNOW ??""

I checked the Japanese Higemari Makaijima rom -- no text. Then I remembered that the English proto -- Makai Island -- got dumped. And what do I find?

MSX . . . . . . . 1985
FC COMMANDO 1986
FC MAKAI ISLAND 1987
M. KOBAYASHI S.40.3.24 BORN, THANK YOU!!
NEXT GAME IS SIDE ARMS.


...so, did Side Arms ever come out for the famicom, or...?

It was as an arcade game (among other platforms), but the NES isn't one of them.

I know it was ported to the turbografx/PC engine (it was one of my first games for the console), but looking through the ROM came up dry. D: I like it when programmers sneak little secrets into their games like that, though.

time to probe around and see if I can find what the MSX game is on that list. >>;

EDIT! I found out both the next game Mr. Kobayashi programmed, and the MSX game missing from the list. Problem is, only the MSX game has a hidden message.

MSX game: Mr. Do's Wild Ride, which has "Programmed by Masamichi Kobayashi, Adachi-ku Tokyo Japan!" right in the beginning of the ROM.

The last game he's credited in? Strider, where he's just reduced to a plain credit in the ending, as "MAMICYAN." Mystery... sort of solved, except for the whole "Where's Side Arms for the Famicom?" question. D:
