We went to the apartment complex to renew our lease. Turns out when we first moved in here, we were ripped off. We're paying more for a one bedroom than the largest two bedroom that they have here.

The guy even told us that we were ripped off when we moved in here and he's unsure what happened.

So what can we do? You would think we would be able to move into the two bedroom since we're already paying more than that amount. And we can. But the manager has to inspect our apartment and we have to pay a new deposit and they have to make sure we make enough money. Since I have a job now where I get paid less, it might not work.

So the guy is going to see if we sign a 12 month lease, if he can get us $500 off of two months' worth of rent.

We've lost about 5K in this bullshit and I say we should be able to move into a two bedroom with no extra money involved.

We have to have some kind of case here, right?

Some people are paying around 800-900 while we're paying $1200 for a one bedroom?! WTF?

Even $800-900/month for 2 bedrooms (what we'd call a 4½ here, counting the kitchen, living room and bathroom) seems a bit expensive here (if that's just the rent, of course), while $1200/month would be like a whole house ... or at least that's about what my parents have been paying for theirs (7 rooms)

A 3½ here (1 room) is like $400-500/month if even (from what I've seen anyway, since I don't have my own rent), and that's still quite a bit higher than it used to be ...


My income (almost twice minimum wage) probably wouldn't even be enough for a $1200/month rent (after food, electricity and all), even living by myself, so that's quite a rip-off to me for a single room

This place (one bedroom) used to be $500/month, then they upped it to $619/month. Detroit is more expensive than Montréal?

My old apartment was more expensive, and I didn't give them enough notice so they tried to make me pay a jacked-up price for May when I left in April

Although even houses that are in decent shape usually cost under $100k here. I was surprised to learn how expensive houses are in most US cities.

Are you satisfied with the one bedroom? You might be better just getting a refund for the overpayment, instead of moving. Less hassle, and you don't have to worry whether you'll still be able to afford it later.

When I moved here, we first looked at a small bachelor apartment. We were going to to take it but when we went to do so, it was already taken. We'd been warned that might happen, so we looked at this one-bedroom place instead. For $75 more it's nearly twice the size.

I don't want to move. The one bedroom is fine for us right now. But I highly doubt they'll refund us, that would be nice. Going to call the corporate office on Monday. Just need to get their number.

If I'm not mistaken, you can get tax credits on the interest on your loan in the US whereas, here, you can't.

Appartment renting in the Montreal Area is fucked up. Huge price gaps !.

As for a house, it's managable if you find a good deal for 500$/month !

If I'm not mistaken, you can take it up with the Housing Board of your current county, and they should be able to do something about it. Then again, I don't know for sure. But hey, it can't hurt to try.

Currently we're trying to cut a deal. Either get into a 2/1.5 with no deposit or two months free.

Update: We've been given the option to move into a 2 bedroom 1.5 bath for $30 more than what we are paying now and a $200 deposit.

It's two buildings over so it's not far from our garage and moving our stuff wouldn't be that hard.

Not sure if we'll take the offer or not, but I think we should.

Go ahead and take the offer... it would be great if you ever adopt or have any children in the future, or if you need the extra bedroom for storage

I have three bedrooms right now, although only two are being used (the other one is my game room )... also 11/2 bath, and a combined kitchen/dining room.

I just have 1 bedroom in this apartment, and I could live in a single room pretty well if I have a kitchen and bathroom. We went with 2 rooms, however, because my dad used to stay here sometimes.

I want to take it, but the hubby isn't too sure that we can afford it.

We could take the 1.5 months of free rent, but then we're still in the same one bedroom, paying way too much for it.

I think we'll be fine, and I really hope I can convince him. It seems we have until Monday to decide.

Looks like if we can get $200 by Monday, we can put a hold on that two-bedroom, which is what I really want and I think is a better deal. Hard part is getting $200. I have $50, but I have no idea where the $150 will come from. We could have it on the 15th, but that apartment might be gone by then. I really hope we can get the money, since the apartment isn't far from our garage and from where we live now. Moving would be easier.

Hubby called the office and told them that we want the 2 bedroom 1.5 bath but that we on;y have $50 and will have the $150 by the 15th. The guy at the office is going to check to see if that's okay.....not holding my breath here.....

If I would have known we would only be $150 short, I would have used my Christmas money and birthday money towards it. Heck, the $50 is part of my birthday money.
