And working sucks. Next three days are 4 to 10, and I don't know what I'm going to do. I hardly know the difference between all these cheeses and meats, what am I supposed to do D: There aren't even any signs on all this stuff! I just have to KNOW what they are and find it on a sheet with a number that contains the pricing codes. And all these rules like beef (I DONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEEFS CHICKEN AND PORKS) on one slicer the rest on others, CERTAIN types of food can't be covered because they're store brand or are cheese. CERTAIN foods that come up often are on a fast track thing in the back but hell I don't know what those are or what to do with them. Curse you for not being noob friendly! Time to install some hacks :>

Deli department at Stop and Shop. Oh well, it's cash $_$

You'll always feel like that going into any job that you get hired for, it happens to just about everybody. Don't worry, it's not like they'll just let you screw up without knowing what you're doing!

You got my support dude. I had the same jitters when I took the trade of Plumbing. For the first three days I did not know what the hell I was doing, but honestly your boss can't scold you if you make a mistake or two. That comes natural.

Eventually you'll be able to get everything like it's natural.

Also, I don't know if my state's law is the same as yours. But your employer can not fire you until like a month or so. So basically if the law is the same, you got a month (Which is plenty of time) to learn just about everything you need to know.

It's Deli. It's not complicated. You don't need to be a doctor to know what the hell you gotta do.

You'll get used to it in no time. It will be hard at first and you may find yourself drained mentally and physically, but it's money and your body will adjust.

As aforementioned by Anya and myself over Skype, your body will adjust over time.

Your superiors at your job will be lenient with you for about 1-3 months (generally). They should understand that you're new, and will guide you along the way until you've got everything down.

They'll probably start scheduling you for 6-hour shifts in a couple of weeks.

Yeah apparently today was my only 4 hour shift for whatever reason. The next three days are 6 hours ones D:

Today I was with a woman and a guy my age, which worked well because she was very helpful as was he. Tomorrow I'll be with the head guy of the department, who is older and very monotone and hard to understand. He also doesn't seem like he ever wants to help you do something

Also, customers who come up on a cell phone (Seriously I saw her walk by like 3 times and she was always on her cellphone talking to seemingly no one), spout out four different orders and expect me to remember it all can shove it. Even if I had this all down, why do you have to make me attempt to remember four different orders and then walk off? If it's written down on a little index card for you so you can remember it, what makes you think I'll remember it? That's just rude :|

My legs hurt and the slip-resistant shoe covers they gave me just barely fit and caused my feet to hurt This suuuuuuucks D:

They had you serving customers on your first day?

I suppose from now on, whenever somebody tosses you a large order, get ready that which you can remember, then politely ask what the other things they wanted whilst also stating you're new to the job--any good customer will certainly give you lenience.

Also, I recommend doing leg stretches before bed so you don't run the risk of developing charlie horses during the night. Once you adapt to the job, though (few months or so, but it'll increasingly get better from your third day and onward), you shouldn't need to do them anymore. Would be a good idea to take advantage of stretching whenever on break, since muscles tense up, etc.

I'm somebody that gets absolutely no exercise, and my job no longer has any strain on my body (three or four 6-hour shifts a week). So, if I got used to it, I'm sure you can too.

Much luck.

Give it two weeks, and you'll have it memorized. Happened to me at Subway. The hardest part of that job was dealing with my boss. He was a DICK.

Oh, I give cashiers/clerks a lot of lenience, especially at this time of year. Most of the time it's the customer's fault anyways; especially when they need to swipe their credit card 5 times before it goes through since they're swiping it the wrong way.

(Why yes, that happened to someone in front of me in line today at the store.)

Sadly, good customers do seem to be few and and far between. The majority of the people I see at work are actually decent, so I suppose I'm pretty damn lucky. But I've certainly witnessed in the past others ahead of me in a line giving crap to cashiers for totally asinine reasons.

Just remember, Sonicandtails, the customer is not always right (in fact, they almost never are). But you're never allowed to be a prick to one without getting a write-up or losing your job.

...I suppose I'm really lucky.

I've very, VERY rarely seen nasty customers around here. Granted, I don't go to stores very often... but god damn, you'd expect to run into an asshole a little more often!

I suppose I should try to find something, soon, but I seriously don't think starting around this time would be very good for me.

Didn't the college semester just end, though? I figure you'd have plenty of free time now, unless there's something else in life that's deterring you from wanting to get a job...

For future reference, though, I'd apply for a seasonal job when the chance arises, especially if you're off from school.

I think the issue is more of "this is my first job, I don't want to be introduced to hell on earth and hate working completely" than being unable to find one.

I'll perhaps look for one again after Christmas... or maybe I can seek an internship of some sort.

e: is it any wonder I got a C in english with how badly I word shit

I agree, good customers are very rare, sadly. The ones I get here act like they're 5 years old.

I've gotten some annoying customers at every retail job I've been to... for example, at Staples, I get customers who keep asking for the ink they want when they're right in front of it, etc.

At my old tutoring job, I'd get a lot of students who wanted me to tell them answers or do their homework, especially for computer programming classes. I think that if I were a freelance programmer who would be doing that kind of stuff, I'd have made more than $9/hour

I'd also get some people who were severely mathematically impaired, as in not being able to multiply by 1 or 0. Those were thankfully quite rare, but the number of people who couldn't do basic fraction arithmetic was staggering. I'm talking about stuff like (1/2) * (1/3) here. Not too complicated, is it? Many others couldn't do basic algebra, and others had no knowledge of the simplest probability theory. I mean like the probability of getting heads on a coin flip. Guesses included 0 and 1.

Keep in mind, I only tutored university students. Not middle-schoolers or anything.
